headed up to flaming gorge friday to fish the "fishing for down syndrome" ling competition. Me and my two team mates fished the entire first night and came out with a really good # of ling. We went to buckboard that morning to weigh in and found the tent poorly staffed. there was only us and one other team in the tent weighing in and they managed to mix up our ling weight/count with the other team. the staff did not check for signs of frozen ling, and left the tail cutting up to the anglers. So if some one wanted to it would be very easy to cheat. We spent most of saturday night out on the lake until the rain, snow, and high wind chased us off. Again we did really well and thought there might be a possibility of placing in the comp. We arrived this morning at buckboard to find a closed up tent and a bunch of Angry anglers reading a note taped to the door saying "canceled due to insurance issues". there was a telephone# on the paper, which turned out to be disconnected line. We better be getting our $60 team entry fee back. I definitely won't be fishing that tournament in the future. what a Sh#% show

What a shame, sorry it didn't work out for all those who attended.

First off I want to thank everyone who participated in the 2nd Annual Jigging 4 Wyoming Down Syndrome Burbot Classic this weekend. Saturday night we were forced to shut things down, but it was to late to notify teams. We had our permit from both the Wyoming Game & Fish Department and the Ashley National Forest. The problem came up when we were notified that the Forest Service did not receive the insurance paperwork from the company we go through and have gone through for the last two derbies (Sinclair). The ranger asked us to shut things down and not to proceed with weigh-ins come morning or a citation would be issued, I would be kept from putting on further derbies, and I had the chance of being sued from participants. I was on the phone and computer until almost 2 this morning trying to get a hold of the insurance company. I WILL NO LONGER USE THIS COMPANY!!! As for the participants and teams who attended I cannot say or express how sorry I truly am that this happened. I had a lot of money involved in advertisements and time involved in planning this out. A derby is so hard to organize and hold by yourself. All team participants will be getting their entry fee's refunded to them through mail tomorrow, everyone will receive their door prizes, with confirmation that you are fishing the Reeling for Relay derby in February we will pay for your entry in that event as well. I can promise you all that I am sorry and will do everything I can to make things right for you all, even if you want your fuel costs for the weekend paid. Really hope this has not ruined everyone for coming out to our derby next year and we will be more organized and have learned from this. I WANT TO THANK THE TANNERS AT BUCKBOARD MARINA, WYOMING GAME & FISH, ASHLEY NATIONAL FOREST, WYOMING DOWN SYNDROME ASSOCIATION, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY YOU WHO SHOWED UP TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AND FISH FOR THE GREAT CAUSE. IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR ENTRY FEES PAID FOR FROM FISHING 4 DOWN SYNDROME PLEASE EMAIL ME YOUR INFORMATION TO fishing4downsyndrome@gmail.com or call me this week (307) 389-2196. I will be at all the other derbies and completely support them all. Thank you guys so much for everything and hope we can see you next year. If you are interested in lending a hand with this organization and helping me out, please let me know!

Below is the standings and results as of Saturday before being shut down.

We fished in the tourney as well. I will be interested also to find out what happened. Doesn't sound like we did quite as well as you guys did, but did manage a few really nice ones. The derby has a good cause, but still needs to be ran like any other. Let's hope Richie comes on and explains this and does the right thing. If anyone hears anything, post it up.

Looks like we posted at the same time. Thanks for clearing this up and sorry for your troubles. Good on you Richie for making this right!

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you had with your tournament. What were the ice conditions like. Can you ice fish the buckboard area. Where does the ice stop and how thick is it. I will be up on wednesday for the burbot bash. Thanks for any info you can supply me with.

I know these tournys are hard to put on, and I think richie is being more than fair to try and make up for his tourny being shut down on the spur of the moment.I was not in it but how many people do you know that would offer you your money back for gas??? And your next entry fee?? He sounds like a good guy to me!! And no I don't know the guy,but it seems like he's doing his best to make things right , I just don't want to see this turn into a big crying fest!

If all that is promised is followed through with, I couldn't imagine anything else that could be done to make it right. Actually, looks like they are going beyond what they are liable for.

Not questioning anyone's intentions, this was a charitable cause. Regardless of the outcome, it's a shame the charity suffered. We make charitable donations for the cause, not for the rewards.

for the person who spent time, money, and alot of energy on this event to come back on here and tell everyone whats up and what went down.... thats stand up in my book! good luck with your next event and hopefully all the bugs you had this year will just mean that much more of a sweeter tourny next year!

I agree, very stand up with everything. I also wish you success in the future derbies you hold. I definitely know how hard these derbies are to put on by yourself, takes a lot more work and time than people think. Sounds like you are going to do everything you can to make it right with everyone.

Thanks for your response Richie. We actually didn't make it in time to enter the tournament but we had a fun time fishing. I hope things can get figured out for next year. Our team is already planning on going.

Thanks for everyone's support, it means so much to me and even more to the Wyoming and Utah Down Syndrome Associations. The first night alone I think we removed around 400+ lbs. of ling. and that is not including Saturday night. Everyone who fished the derby you are being taken care of and hope that you can make future derbies. Please contact me for more info on this or if you would like to help organize the next derby. 307-389-2196 of fishing4downsyndrome@gmail.com

WOW where do you start with all this..................We fished the fishing for down syndrome this weekend i thought this would be a great derby and for a good cause. I do realize that once in a while things don't work out just right. However i do believe things could have been handled in a more respectful manner and have the courtesy to make an attempt to call everyone to let them know what had happened. That would have made a huge difference. Once it was shut down you should have been on the phone calling all the people that were fishing the derby. For one once it was shut down you being on the computer or on the phone with the agencies wouldn't matter it was a little to late to fix the problem. For two you should of had your a** at buckboard sunday morning with everyone's money and an explanation on what had happened. To put on an event you must be able to handle the public and be willing to stand up and explain yourself or the problem at hand. I am dissapointed in the way it was handled after it was shut down. Who in there right mind runs home and doesn't answer there phone. Very piss pour. I would love for you to pay for my gas, propane, bait and helped clean all those ling on sunday knowing we could of been home saturday night and not out fishing all night on two hours of sleep in a damn storm for nothing. It is never to late to try to make an attempt to call people to let them know what happened. Sorry about what happened to the derby and the D.S. for not getting any money. In a nut shell it was a train wreck at best. Very dissapointed in the out come and will never ever fish this derby again not becuase it got shut down but for the simple fact that the person in charge has no business running a derby.

Wow. I guess we see tact isn't a strong point. Perhaps you should stick to for-profit tournaments. It's apparent that the organizers humility and remorse is irrelevant to you. This was a charitable cause after all...I thought all who were there did so to support downs syndrome, not what they could get from the tourney.
