Full Version: Best time to topwater Mead stripers?

I'm from Utah and fish Powell for stripers every year. A friend said they got into some great boils in Mead last year. I've never fished Mead but I think it would be a fun trip in my boat earlier in the season. I'll be fishing out of a fish 'n ski with a bow mounted trolling motor.
When is the best time to catch Mead stripers on a topwater? What about on a fly? Also, any recommendations on a hotel to stay at that is near the fishing and where I can park the boat trailer?
Thanks for any insight.

[cool]They sometimes start "slurping" in May. but usually June is a better bet. The shad larva are real small so match the hatch accordingly. I've used a 6wt. out there all the time with success. I fish from a tube so don't know of trailer friendly hotels around but I'm sure someone on the board can help you. I do know that Sunset Station hosts fishing tourneis and has alot of parking but is about half hour from the lake.

[BLUE][#000000]I don't know if it is the nicest place around, but it is definitely closest to Lake Mead and has boat/trailer parking available. Check it out at the link below.[/#000000]

Check out Railroad Pass Hotel & Casino. It's right outside of Boulder City to the West on us 93. Not far from the lake at all either....maybe 15 minutes or so, depending on traffic. I see trucks with boats in the parking lot there all the time....so I'm assuming they have parking for your rig. The Hacienda is about 1/2 mile from the entrance to Lake Mead....definitely closer.

Oh, there's also a Quality Inn right up the hill from my house in Boulder City. I live about as close as you can get to the lake.....

Lastly, there's also the Boulder Inn up in town. http://boulderinnandsuites.com/

Thanks for all the info. Sure sounds better than trying to pull the boat into covered parking at Bellagio (which I will have to visit cause its the only place I've ever seen that has seared bluenose - my new favorite fish - try it at the buffet you'll love it).

Peak topwater action for striper starts about mid June as the young of the year shad start getting bigger. The action gets good by August and stays strong til about November. Sometimes they'll be on topwaters til late Dec, other times they go deep a little earlier.
