It was a really nice day this morning so I went to look at the fishing possibilities.

Since it was close I decided to look at what the ice was like at Hawkins.

The ice out to about 15 or 20 ft is only about an inch thick. Someone tried to walk out next to the boat dock.

It looks like they tested the water depth too. [shocked]

I figured if Hawkins had that bad of edges most of the other SE Idaho reservoirs might be iffy too. So I went over to the Bear River instead. It was a good choice.

There wasn't nearly as much water coming down the Bear as there has been, and the fishing was nice. My guides were icing up, and I had to keep clearing them, but it wasn't bad. I mostly caught foot long rainbows that were really heavily spotted.

The deer were even out for a little stroll in the sun.

Fun day anyway! [cool]

Too bad the ice wasnt thick enough. Im glad our ice is still good further north. Those spots on the rainbows are sure thick. I also saw a couple deer today. It was a nice day to be out compared to our weather lately.

That looks like a great trip, and I'll bet being out in the sun was nice after all the soggy weather this past week. I'm all for the ice just going completely, I'm getting cabin fever [crazy]

great pics and report as always. glad you were able to enjoy the day and catch a few fish [cool]

Nice report. Must say your "Bear River" sure looks a different flavor than my closest stretches of "Bear River". It gets so chocolaty brown as it comes to Cutler - you'd think Augustus Gloop would be diving in!

Bet you were glad not to be the one testing the water-depth! Spooky - edges are iffy these days - we need some COLD nights!

The upper section of the Bear is a nice area in the wintertime. Most of the time in the summer it is thick with moss. It isn't the chocolate milk of lower down, but pretty seaweedy which makes it harder to fish.

I was VERY glad not to be the depth tester! It really shouldn't be very deep there at least not over 4 ft, but if they weren't wearing waders I bet it was a COOL experience! Since there weren't any tracks anywhere else, they must have left right away.

I considered putting my waders on and giving it a try at one of the other reservoirs, but I got to thinking that since most of them are lower in elevation, maybe I couldn't get on them at all. So I decided to go over to the river instead.

The ice edges are getting iffy in a few places where I fish too. I usually quit ice fishing come March but this year might be sooner. Everyone stay safe, wear a life jacket and pack some rope and go with a partner.
