Full Version: Slow and murky at Hyrum

I went by Hyrum today around 1:00. Only spent about and hour and a half on the ice, down by the dam. The edges were very soft, but only out about 3-4 feet. You could still get on the ice if you walked 20 or 30 yards south along the shoreline. Ice was still good and safe. The water though seemed pretty murky. I talked to a guy that came down from the inlet end on his sled, and he said it had been the same up that way. It was probably the result of all the rain in the last few days.

There were others doing some catching, but it was not fast or furious. My luck was in, it was a beautiful day to be out on the ice and I didn't have to take any slimers off a hook.

Once the water gets a little color at Hyrum my success rate sure goes down. Wish someone would teach me how to change that. But glad you had a nice day to enjoy. Better luck with the catching next time. J

I think color of lure presentation is affected a lot by both depth and water clarity.
If I remember right - as clarity decreases you lose the red-spectrum first, and then eventually down to the blues/silvers.

More flash, more glow, maybe even a rattle - might help if the visual triggers are impaired. Maybe adding a little smelly jelly!!
If it's gets dark, go dark, or go light! (black or white jigs). When the colors are shot - fish will see a silhouette, so a dark jig can actually stand out more.

Makes me chuckle - there's been plenty of slime-rockets that have hopped off a hook, and my response "oh good"!
So - no perch at Hyrum still eh? I'm gonna find those suckers!!!
I need to try those color techniques. I have most of my poles rigged with similar colors so I ought to mix them up a bit and see if that helps. Got a work friend that swears by those color sensors. I would like to try it before I buy that. Looks really expensive to me by the time I have to buy all that new tackle on top of the monitor price. Lure companies ought to loan them out at the docks to increase sales. Well got to run. Later J

Not sure if I'm familiar with these 'color sensors' - sounds like it's tied into an underwater camera? Got a link?

please don't tell me there are MORE gadgets for ice fishing I can spend money I don't have on!!!!

I hear ya - got a rainbow of jig colors, shapes, sizes - and what do I do - use what's on the rod from the last trip - hope it works THIS time!
I do switch up some - but I don't like tying up in the cold, so I pre-tie a number of jigs, and jig combos, put them on a lure-keeper, then just slap 'em on when I want to change (or have broken off! [mad])
Seen the unit in my new Cabelas catalog I'll check the name and try to find a link tonight. I do the same thing on jigs use what worked last time. Guess I'm not a real fisherman yet maybe someday. Later J

I've been wanting to take my wife out icefishing at hyrum. Last weekend got ruined because of the rain. I'm worried about the ice around the edges for this weekend. I'll be fishing friday morning.

What do you think the ice conditions will be like on Friday morning? I just saw the weather channel is predicting rain again for tomorrow in Hyrum.

The weather report I am looking at says there is a chance of showers on Thursday, but the low on Friday is predicted to be 9 degrees, so maybe the edges will firm up a little on Friday morning. With a high of 34 it may be another beautiful day.

Coyote- I think he is referring to the color c-lector, a little gadget that reads water clarity and provides a recommendation for lure color choice. I have never used one, but they have been around a lot of years. $125 at Cabelas.
