Snowy, windy wet, hooked 6 landed 4 using bead head hares ear jig and irish spring chronomid flygoddes gave me. the others members of my group were getting them on pink black, and white jigs tipped with of all thing worms. heres a few pics

I have a bunch of the irish spring patterns that I just tied up....the ones flygoddess demonstrated on saturday....but I was saving for softwater...Maybe I will try on Ririe tomorow on kokes...

I never thought about a chironomid for ice fishing as I was thinking they are the rising/hatching form of the midge. Actually I just have never thought about "ice" fishing and what bugs are available under the ice.

How was the road into the reservoir? Do they plow it regularly?

Them are some good looking fish. I really like the dark colors. I have yet to fish chesterfield this ice season. Mostly because my auger sucks. And the ice is always so thick. Good job and nice fish.

Flyfishing is good. That is most of what I have. I don't have any regular jigs, just bead heads and weighted flies. I have been tying up some snails, ratty dragons, some nymphs(hares ears etc), and some red/chartreuse buggers, and whatever else I can think of!!

I used 2 rods buddies were using 3 each with jigs bite was lite ice was 2ft give or take

I would like to start off my post with Poky is an avid fly fisher. My hubby(his brother) and I do not walk on water. I could be persuaded but no way Mr Purist will.
We have talked a lot about our Deep Water nymphing during the summer. It consist of a 30' leader with one or more nymph/chironomids. One on the bottom then tags with second (some waters you can go up to 5 but it gets messy)
So, we drop this leaders straight down off a floating fly line....sound familiar.
From what I have read, it is the same as ice fishing, so why not?

I have been dying to try it, but missed Poky last weekend.

I did a fly tying show at Jimmy's All Season's Angler Saturday morning and showed several Chironomid patters that have great success with.

I am so stoked that these work but really not to surprised as to what they do in the soft water days.

The fish I caught a few weeks ago at Chesterfield had bellies full of snails. A snail pattern may work well under the ice up there.

Those hares ears look great! What size are they?

I am thinking I need to pick up a few jig hooks so some of my buggers etc float more horizontal. But with chironomids vertical is great! I need to tie some more mids.

I tied some Irish Springs on the hooks as well



They are Fly Tying Jig Heads. #10 1/80. Just remember to tie upside down on hook meaning, wing case on the bend side, as that is the way they will float. Poky makes his own with special bent hooks and Split Shot.

Thanks for the tips and showing your gear. I recently moved from Wisconsin and have had a hard time "ice'n" the trout. At the end of the day it is still fishing no matter what your using...sometimes they are active and sometimes they arent
