Full Version: Anyone fished the Olympic Peninsula??

Probably moving west, and with any luck will only be a couple hours from rivers in the Olympic Peninsula. Rivers like the Hoh, Sol Duc, Bogachiel, and so on. I don't have any experience fishing the peninsula, and am looking for any advice I can get. I have fished steelhead a lot in Salmon, and Challis just not anywhere else. Any info on rods/reels, and tackle would be great.

Yeap, I've fished them all with my buddy that guides up there. You will need a little heavier gear as the fish are fresh. And a drift boat is a real good idea because of limited access on the tribal grounds. Not a bad idea to hire a guide to show you the ropes. I'm not 100% sure if Shane is heading over this year or if he's staying in Orofino for the season. You can contact him Dream Drifter Adventures and if he can't help you out I'm sure he will point you in the right direction to someone that can. Enjoy it over there!

You'll be needing a ton of 6in bubble gum pink worms in that neck of the woods!

Check the Seattle Times outdoor section. Great fishing reports, with an interactive map. Also, if you have a boat, and it doesn't need to be the ocean-waters type, Port Angeles, Sekiu, and of course the waters nearer Seattle can be great salmon and good halibut waters. A deep-V 16'er works fine in those more protected areas on most days.
Also, there are two forums over there that are extremely active. I don't think I can mention them on this site, although the BigFish franchise isn't very active over there. Mike

If you are a couple of hours away from the Oly Penn rivers, where do you think you will be based? There are a lot of other opportunities over there if we have more of an idea of what you will be close to. Lots of great steelheading and salmon fishing in some of the smaller rivers too.

It is an amazingly beautiful area, but if you are on the west side of the Penn, then I hope you have lots of good rain gear. The fishing can be really great in the rain though, so get out no matter what the weather. The east side of the peninsula is much drier. (Rain Shadow area) I love the Hood Canal area.

Thanks for all the responses so far guys. I am hoping we end up in the the Bremerton area, Silverdale more specifically. I don't have any problem with rain, and already have a good rain suit.

Weather wise you will be in a good area. It has been more than 20 years since I lived there so I don't have any idea on what is current good fishing or what the regulations are.

We used to fish the upper Green River above Auburn for steelhead and trout. Also the Skagit above Mount Vernon, and the Snoqualmie. There are a lot of lakes in the Bremerton area, and the sea food is to die for! I really miss the fresh crabs and shrimp for Hood Canal.

There are a lot of small and large rivers on the Peninsula especially around the Port Angeles area. We also used to fish the Elwha River in that area. Lots of fishing for trout and also sea run cutts and dollys.

I think we also fished the Duckabush on the east slope of the Olys and the Nisqually R near Olympia.

Thanks for all the replies. I am pretty excited to get out there and get after it.
