I am looking at taking a trip to the preston area to fish on Sunday. I fish the lakes around that area a lot in the summer, but not so much on the ice. Which pond would be the best bet to get into some perch or maybe some crappie. Not looking for exact detail, just some help pointing me to the right pond. Thanks.

I would fish the one that you like to fish in the summer. The ice should be ok at most of them. You might need a plank to get on in certain areas. I like to fish twin lakes in the summer and winter. I like to fish a few of the other ones but havn't made it to ice fish them this year. I know next weekend i am going to hit onida.
Good Luck whichever one you choose.

If you want crappie I would go to twin lakes. There hard to find but are nice in there.. just be carfull with there as the ice is leaving very fast. I went the other day and it was only 5/6 inches. Where I was one spot I checked out the ice was breaking under my feet. And there is open water in some places.

Anyone know if Condie can be accessed now with a 2wd truck?

Get down to it sure no problem. Seems how its that slick clay type mud it may be a bit of a trick to get back out.. if the ground is frozen then I don't see a problem but if its thawed out at all even a 4wd is going to struggle getting out.

I wouldn't try it if the temperature has been above freezing or will get above freezing while you are there. The mud on it is nasty!

Thanks - any suggestions for some perch fishing in the area?

Well in Preston area you have a wide variety of choices on where to go for perch. Johnson, Lamont, Oneida, Foster, Glendale, Weston, winder, basically take your pick.

Most of the reservoirs in the area have some. There are some in Twin too, but they seem to be hard to find.
There are lots in Montpelier Reservoir, but it is quite a ways further over.
Not much size to any of them.

[mad]Fished Onieda yesterday, no fish, didn't even mark any on the vexilar. Punched a lot of holes and tried three different areas, nodda! Seen a couple other fishermen down buy the dam on west side and they were moving a lot also. Don't think I'd waste my time there, and the road is real icey in spots and real muddy in spots. Weston is bad and Condie also, just a lot of 3-4 inchers in condie. Sounds like if you want some perch you probably ought to head to Montpelliar, that would be my suggestion.

You folks've been very helpful. I tagged along and we ended up hitting Glendale. Had a good day for fish, got into a mess of trout, and a number of perch. Some pretty decent ones, some bait-size.
The edges were a bit soft. I took a leap of faith and made it out - but some were not so lucky. CV put a couple feet in, and another fellow who was on the ice before us went back to his truck, and plunked one foot through on the way back.
Getting off - after a warm day of more thawing - pretty well had to walk through - but the side east of the lauch at least had some very shallow water.
I expect to be spending some more time up there this season exploring some of those lakes (at least until the powersquad moves in!).
