Took my son and daughter over to Hyrum today to play on the ice. Seems that we were not alone! There was a big scouts outing, guess they'd stayed overnight and were having ALL kinds of activities on/around the ice. Looked like they were having a good time is all I can say!
We headed out from the boat ramp and stopped about mid-lake. Were in almost 60ft of water. Decided to pop a hole and drop ALL the way down (visions of perchies danced in my head). Well, no such luck on the perchies, but the trout were running through about 10feet under the ice. Pretty quickly popped a planter bow out of a hole. The boy wanted to get across the lake away from all the "kids" (who were mostly around his age!!!) but we hung out for a while.
Daughter laced up to try some skating. Unfortunately the ice was a bit rough and she wasn't loving it. We were pretty much between the boat launch and Devil's half - and the ice was a good 4-5 inches. But thinnner than we'd encountered up towards the inlet. Edges were plenty good. Seemed like everyone else was hugging the shores, we were the only nuts out in the middle. But the troutskies didn't mind, and continued to come through at a pretty consistent 10-feet down. Did catch a few humps at 20 and 40 ft depths, but couldn't get there quick enough, or they just didn't like our offer.
Landed a few footlongs, missed a BUNCH of bites. Had the Jawjacker go off a half dozen times - the only hookup came when I'd JUST iced a nice fish - then had a jackup, and the other rod go - all hands on deck! Triple action! The first I'd landed out of the middle hole decided it wanted to take a dive back down the hole - luckily my JiggerTotter wire kept the whole rod from joining - well, either we had fish on both other poles, or a venturing fish that wrapped them all up - before you know it we had three lines tangled, and then - no fish! A triple to zilch. Geeeze!
Was LOVING the Lowrance - first time I'd had a chance to watch a fish come up, or head down to hit my lure - kewl seeing those arcs travel!
Couple scouts and masters came out to visit - they brought me luck as I showed them a fish on the graph, dropped my jig down to match depth - hit, bite, hookset - iced it! Good timing! Good Luck! Perfect.
For once - my boy was getting into it, and working the finder - that I had to drag HIM off the ice! That was kewl!
Looking forward to an Idaho Adventure tomorrow! May not be much ice-time left, so hope to enjoy what I can - while I can!
