Met up with CVFisher and headed north of the border in search of some good ice, and good fish. Well - sort of found good ice if you don't count the slushy edges! Think we coulda used a plank! There was one BIG step, and CV dipped a toe (or two) but once on the ice - it was thickest I've drilled through this year. Good thing we didn't have to move around much to find fish!

We hit Glendale, and went out from the boat launch. Ended up in 15-20ft, and dropped some sonar and jigs down. Fish just off the bottom - YUUUUP - they was some perch alrighty! Some frisky young bows came flopping to play. Landed into a couple hunky mothers! Came up puking up perchlings! Several bitty bows - not even 6 inchers, but then this chunky monkey came to play. I can't count - but probably landed at least 25 bows over the day. I think CV had at least as many, if not more. (do you count?)

The dear perch were fairly cooperative. Some were GENUINE dinkers (kept some micros for catfish bait!). But a few had some bulk to 'em. CV caught the biggest perch, think I had the biggest trout. Slowed down pretty good in the later afternoon hours.

But MAN what fun to watch those marks on the finder - see them come up to your jig, see the spring-bobber bounce, and hookin and grinnin! Loving it! Of course there was plenty of 'come up and look, yet nada' along the way too. Seemed like they wanted some action. Had loads of raised rods with follows up from the bottom - just for a look see. Catch them come up and check out the flasher then drop down to the jig (ready, set, fire!)

We listened to barely audible trickle turn into a serious stream over the course of the day. Sign sign - everywhere a sign. Springs coming!

One thing I know - I'm sold on spending some time on Idaho's southern lakes this year. Sold - as in bought the danged annual pass! Now I gotta make it worth it! Good start is all I can say.

Thanks to CVf- for taking me up, showing me around some of the lakes there. Lots of options, so very close - I'm a keeper now! I swear - everytime I looked out the window - that boy was pulling up another fish!
Thanks for heading north with me yote. Got more then the toes wet. Punched through as we went out on the ice and went in past my knees. I have had an electric heater on my feet for an hour now and I still can't feel them. Well worth it though, the fishing was fast at times. Company out on the ice and the drive was very welcome. Hopefully we can do it again soon.

[Wink] Great job guys, nice to see someone get into some perch lately. I hit Onieda friday in search of some perch and got the big skunk, didn't even mark a fish in 5 hours. Stopped by Glendale on the way back and decided I had enough drilling for one day so I didn't even get out if the truck. I have heard there are also some crappie in there so I guess I'm going to have to go up again for a perch and crappie search. Maybe we'll run into you up there sometime.[fishin]

You know your tent in that pic makes you look like your on the pooper. I call them outhouse shelters![laugh]

Glad to hear of you getting out again CV. I was about to PM you and see if ya were still fishin these days.

It's better to get your legs wet then to sunburn your eyeballs right?[:p]

Hey shut the door CV.[Wink]

I am very proud of you for keeping 4 mighty perch dude. Once you taste them you will know why they are my favorite fish to eat. So how are you going to prepare them? Fried is the best.

Glad to see you took the plunge and bought the Idaho season pass. I don't think you'll regret it. Glendale is really loaded with bows, and the Kamloops strain that they plant are some feisty little buggers. As was mentioned, there are some good crappie in there as well as some very respectable gills. The bass are very healthy there too. It's a shame it ends up a being a zoo in the summer, but early and late in the season, it's a fun little pond.

As I told CVf on the drive - I blame you in large part for MY plunge. [shocked] Though you had help. I just hope I can get enough time and venturing to make it all pay off. But the little scouting we did while there and on the way home helped me realize what a maze of little honey holes is pocketed around those hills.
Rumor has it they might be planting some Tigermusky up in some of them puddles ?!?!

I was warned to watch for Crappie, CV got me using the Zoom on the finder - and dang that's kewl! But I had to zoom out from time to time just to keep an eye out for something suspended. I guess that Glendale just goes goes goes - but long and narrow must still make for some good wake when the powersquadron gets in gear (grr).

So what makes a 16" Trout SOOOOO fat? Good eatin boyz! My son wants me to put this on facebook, but I don't know that it's suitable for general consumption (so to speak).

PS: CV- sure hope those toes thaw up! I was a bit worried for ya! Um, I think if we go up again THIS ice season, we're bringing a big board!

aftermath
Sounds like a pretty good day. Maybe I should be heading North for some better perchin days.

Man - that fish was absolutely stuffed. Those trout were binging on the perch. I know by the time we left there were puked up baby perch every where I looked around my hole. Oh and Twins, I did not personally eat the fish. I would never put that stuff in my mouth.

Well now I really hope you continue to have good success since I'm largely responsible for your investment. I still need to get my license this year though. With the warming weather, I think I will get it soon. There really are a lot of places to choose from, it's nice to have so much variety in one area, though sometimes it makes it harder to learn a place well as you keep wanting to try the others.

There is indeed talk of planting some more musky up there. There are a few left in some of the reservoirs from the last stockings in 2006, but not many.

Glendale turns downright murky in the summer with all the boat traffic. It really reminds me a lot of Newton with it being crowded and long and skinny. I've fished it quite a bit less than the other waters in the area because of this, but I'm hoping to really explore it this spring looking for prespawn largemouth.

The perch had a really amazing spawn the last two years up in that area. All the fish were extremely healthy last fall. The bass were looking especially fat.[inline "fatty magoo small.JPG"]
I'm very curious to see what they look like prespawn if they were that chubby in September [Smile]

What, wearing gloves! You sissy! (friendly ribbing CYS) Dude I am surprised it wanted more food. Greedy little slimmer!

I think we need to "force feed" CV some fried perch so he can get hooked on eating them.[:p] My twin and I will hold him down while you get the pliers in his mouth ok.

are the roads paved or muddy to the lake? i hit oneida this weekend getting in when the mud was frozen but getting outwas messy. I may go up in the morning to find some perch.

The road to Glendale is paved all the way to the boat ramp. No worries about mud. Remember and take a plank cause the first step is a doosey.

I didn't think it was legal to us perch for catfish bait????

[quote monstermasher]I didn't think it was legal to us perch for catfish bait????[/quote]

Depends on the water. From the 2011 Procs:

Quote:Dead yellow perch may be used as bait only in Deer Creek, Echo, Fish Lake, Gunnison, Hyrum, Johnson, Jordanelle, Mantua, Mill Meadow, Newton, Pineview,
Rockport, Starvation, Utah Lake, Willard Bay and Yuba reservoirs.

Doesn't seem to be an indication of WHERE the perch came from. Some waters you can only use baitfish ON that water (Cisco at Bear Lake for example). Whitebass are limited where they can be used (no pizza stripers for Willard).

Sadly (and for some silly reason) my favorite Cattin' grounds (waters) do not allow the use of perch. I've heard they have/do exist in the river system, but yet are not allowed.
Other minnows are though. So guess I'll stick to carp-strips, shrimp, and crawlers. But I'll be pitching some perchlings at Willard!
Newton and PV you're also limited to the 1" rule.

That was actually my boy's finger. I'll tell him you said so - he may show you one of his others!!! [pirate]

Hey - some trout have teeth - well, not the dinky ones.
I don't know how tough YOUR skin is - but between the gill plates and the scales - my hands turn to alligator skin if I DON'T use a glove while 'processing' a stack.

I agree - when he told me he'd NEVER tried 'em - I suggested we split the pile (at an appropriate remote location, with correct donation notes written up - signed - notarized, of course!)
They got a tool for that - a Jaw-spreader! Works good on Musky too, but you usually don't have to force them to eat perch. They KNOW!
Had a chance to share to fried perch with another forum member who's fished forever and never tried them (I was shocked!).

I still maintain - folks who don't like fish, probably haven't had it prepared right. Pickle or smoke a sucker or a carp even - with enough spice, and it's nice!

Did you see the "Flying Carp/Dish" vids I linked?
Hey Twins, just sticking up for my fellow fisherman, listen it happens even to the best of us.I really don't remember my reason for the glove though,it may of been from a gar I'd just caught or it was the cold I think[laugh].I forgot, old pic from 2008.I forgot, you know it could of been all that tequila[crazy][inline DSCN0018.JPG] O'well,I hope my bass makes up for the glove[angelic]
Hey guys,I'd like you to meet my Twins frog and toad, although they are identical, one sometimes acts up and of course, one is Evil[Image: happy.gif][inline "twin outboards.jpg"]
