I would probably say the Berry is your best bet for taking scouts out. Went to Hyrum yesterday and it was slow, the ice was around 6-8 inches, but the edges are getting very soft. We drove by Mantua, and it's looking thin as well. When we fished Mantua a few weeks back, it was pretty light in the way of bites, didn't catch a whole lot of perch or gills, but a few for a taste at dinner. I haven't been to Strawberry yet this year, but have heard its pretty good.

Haven't been to pine view this year. Been to Starvation 3 times and did well except the first time when I forgot my fish finder. Been to Strawberry a few time also. The berry will have the thickest ice and the safest ice. There will be 16 plus inches and probably a foot or more of snow after this latest storm. Starvation will be fast fishing at bunny gulch for perch if the ice is safe to get on. That would be the funnest for the boys. You might call and see what the ice conditions are. The berry is doing well, but the bite is light. The bows at soldier creek are hitting good in the shallower water. I was at the ladders on saturday and we caught 17 cutts, the largest was 24.5 inches. They were holding tight on the bottom and I don't think others were doing very well. We were just in the right spot and had the right equipment.

soldier creek or strawberry would definately be the safest for the kids. But the bite is light as previously stated. you may want to consider Deer Creek if you are already thinking of driving to Strawberry. That is if you don't mind 6" of ice. The fish were biting hard and fast on sunday, with probably a 16"-17" average fish size. should be easy for the kids to hook plenty there. If you head strawberry way send me a message i can point you in an easy to explain spot where the little bows have been biting all day long untill about 3:00 in the afternoon.

I was at rabbit gulch on Sunday from 8:30-2:00. Two of us caught between 300 and 400 small perch in 18 feet of water using a Swedish pimple. The ice was around 8 inches thick maybe 10 inches and the edges were fine.
Hope this helps.

I'll be at Deer Creek Sat. I could help out if you decide that route.

When you say the edges were fine, I assume you did not need a plank at all? Any trout in your outing?

i take planks just to be safe then sorry

I did not need a plank getting on or off. If it stays warm it wouldn't surprise me if you needed on by this weekend but last Sunday it was solid.
I didn't catch any trout. I was fishing one pole on the bottom (about 18 ft) for perch and had one pole with looking for trout between 5 and 10 ft but didn't get any bites all day and didn't see any action on my showdown other than the perch on the bottom. I considered going deeper and searching for trout. But we were having a such a great time catching the perch that we lost track of time and never moved.
