I was reading a little bit about the Large Mouth at UL and watched a fellow BFT'er catch a few out of his boat last week and decided that I better give it a go. Knowing that I don't know jack shit about Bass or how to catch them, I intended on my trip being more of a learning lesson than an actual catching lesson. It turns out it was a little bit of both. I caught two Bass on giant wooly buggers that I tied up to (hopefully) imitate cray fish. I don't know how good of a job I did there, but I did manage to snag two out from the cover, about 12 inches from the shoreline.

This guy measured 16" and was pretty fat. I have no idea if Bass are normally wide around the belly, but this fellow seemed very well fed.

This was his little brother. I don't think I can tell the difference between a LM Bass and a SM Bass, but I assumed this is just a younger LM -- anyone confirm? I didn't get a measure on this one, but for his size, he put up a pretty good fight.

I also got into some 'Gills and Crappie with small pink and chartreuse buggers, some of them real slabs:

Ive never caught a LMB either and was going to give it a try this year, looks like a fatty to me though!

They do tend to be fat around the middle, especially this time of year as they prepare for the spawn. That's a beauty though. I'd say you did quite well for your first time. The smaller one is indeed a smaller largemouth. The marking aren't as distinct, but the dark horizontal line down the side gives away the largemouth. Smallies have numerous vertical bars down their sides. Also, when the mouth is closed, the mouth extends past the eye with a largemouth, just about even with the eye on a smallmouth. Those are some great fish. This winter is making me wish I still lived in Utah County. Cache is milder than usual, but definitely a lot colder than down there. I'm sure all the ice fishing fanatics probably feel the opposite, but it's definitely not my cup of tea.

That big bass is something to be proud of dude! They fight so well, and I can only dream of hooking one that size on a fly rod. And you tied your own imitation.
bravo!

Too cool man. I tried fly fishing for White bass after getting bored of spinners last year. The spawn was done though by then though.[frown] This year I intend to try again! UL is getting my attention latley. I foresee a trip coming soon!

Do it. White bass are tons of fun on the fly. I don't know if it's still there, but when I was in high school, there was a little pond at the Lindon boat harbor with a canal connecting to the lake. The white bass would run up into it and you could nail them on flashy white streamers. The water up in the pond was clear too, so you could often see the bass come out and whack your fly. Fun times.
