A couple weeks ago I got a fly trying kit as an early Valentines/Birthday present. I've been having a ton of fun playing around! I've tied maybe 30-40 flies already - of course, in varing degrees of quality and potential effectiveness.

It was my actual birthday on Wednesday so I got off work a little early and headed to Willow Pond. The wind was being a pain for the first hour or so but finally died down as the sun started setting. I rigged up a home-tied hares ear under a home-tied yellow glow bug and was casting off the dock.

About the time that it was getting dark enough that I could barely see my indicator, I started getting hits. I managed to hook 2 trout! and fought them for a while! but both got off Sad

So, it's a little disappointing - I can't yet technically say I've caught a fish on on a homemade fly (only hooked them), and I don't know which fly they were hitting. My hunch is they were coming over to check out the glow bug and then munching on the hares ear. But very fulfilling to know that something I tied actually works!

That's awesome. I remember catching my first fish on a fly that I tied. It was a nice 14" Brown on the Logan River.

Has willow pond been stocked recently? I have a little cousin that I would like take fishing soon.

Willow was stocked recently [Smile] Afew of the other local ponds were stocked also but I don't know which ones . But I know Willow was stocked. Try BH Hares Ears on the south side and BH Pheasant tails on the East side. Size 14 on both. Has always worked for me. Good luck

Hey your fly fooled the fish, that's the part that matters most. Congrats. It's an addictive hobby, but a good one.

Good job on both the tying and the fishing! Catching them on your own flies is awesome. You can't turn back now.

My first fish on my own fly was foul-hooked. I don't really count it, but that memory will always be tainted.

I live right by Willow and the only fish I ever catch there are tiny bluegill. They make great fertilizer!
Yea but you made up for it Carpinator.
