I fished the SF of the Snake this morning with FishingRookie and StikRig. We were fishing by 8:00 and it was still pretty chilly. We were cleaning ice off the guides every few casts for the first little while until it started to warm up. The fishing wasn't too fast but we ended up with a few browns and a whitefish. Not too bad for a couple hours on a pretty cold morning. Most of the fish were caught in pretty slow water on a rubber legs. It was my first time out on the open water in a while and I am looking forward to spring quite a bit now and not having to clean the ice off my guides. I think the higher flows on the South Fork have been helpful to the fish this winter. Most of the fish I have been catching are fat and healthy compared to last winters skinny browns. I also think it's crazy how much each fish's appearance can vary from one another even though they are in the same river system.

This one was really golden and what I would consider a typical looking brown.

This one had some awesome spots on him and even a hint of blue.

This one had very little red spots and had a really blue tint.

I also saw these three bald eagles sitting over the river on my way out.

Those are some beautiful browns. It seems like the browns vary more in appearance than other trout.

Great report! Soft water....and you didn't even have any ice chunks floating down. Spring is coming.

Those are some pretty browns. It is fun to see the variations in coloring.

Lovely browns, Shane. They look very healthy indeed. Thanks for sharing.

Remember when FishingRookie broke his fly rod! That was embarrassing! (but at least it gave me a good excuse to go buy a new TFO in a 5wt)

Good choice in fly rods I bought mine a few years back and love it. My brother decided to take up the fly rod last year and bought the same thing and he loves it too.

This time of year the browns tend to be long and skinny. It's because of weight loss during the recent spawn. They'll fatten up again when the water temps go up and the bugs and minnows become active. Those are some colorful fish, and you show them off well.
