On many Idaho waters (ICE) you can use up to five poles right, but you have to buy an extra pole permit to fish two on open water? Why?

i have wondered this many times my self. my friend once asked a fish and game officer while we were loading up a boat at ririe if he knew why and he really didnt even know either. the only thing we can come up with is that its just another thing that fish and game figured they could charge money for. I have my two pole permit but the only time i ever use two poles on soft water is when im plunking for salmon. other than that i use what i can hold in my hand.

If you are not running around digging more holes and checking extra lines you might freeze and they figure that having this in the rules will save dollars for rescue efforts having to go out and get frozen people off of the ice. [cool]

When its soft water you can move around side to side and cast far or short distance. On ice they allow 5 because you are limited on moving your line around. Thats what F&G have told me.

Good question! I have wondered this myself. Always seemed odd to me.

I thought that to, but shore fishers stay in one area. And you can drill more holes and move rather then having a machine setting the hook.

shore or boat fishers cover alot more area than if your sitting on a slab of ice. Its alot easier moving around soft water covering more area than punchin hole after hole. Thats what has been explained to me, my machine that sets hooks is what I call left arm right arm lot of people use hooksets but there are a few of us left using the old fashioned way

I guess I have just seen those shore anglers that stay in one spot, cast to the same place and drink that beer (not a bad style[cool])

What about deep nymphing?

I guess I just don't get the idea that on soft water you have to purchase the right to use a second pole, but you still have to find the fish, but on hard deck you can use 5 to find them. Seems this would benefit places like Henry's. I see the fascination with wanting the ice fishing there now, specially with those Jaw Jackers to up the odds.

Just trying to make conversation here is all, not like we can change anything[laugh][laugh]

It is just another way to get more money out of you. But I buy one for trolling. I can have both with different lures or bait at differnt deephs. In wyoming it is a 2 pole only ice or open water I would like to see that in Idaho. Even on ice I think it would make you a better fisherman.Wyomming does have special regs. for a few lakes for ice fishing like the gorge. What tee's me off is being charged $3.00 to ice fish ririe they don"t provide anything for the ice fisherman no out houses no bait shop no warming hut nothing it is not the countys privet lake! I can see a charge for summer they help lonch boats have johns up and down the lake keep the grass mowed./ nice docks. But realy what do they provide for the ice dud's???? NOTHING.[mad][mad]

i know the answer

it's to give people that live in Utah and don't ice fish a reason to complain about Idaho fish and game rules, again!!!!!

I sure hope you don't think I'm a utard[sly][sly]

i've seen a couple responses stating that it's just another way for idfg to charge more money. where do you think their funding comes from? basically it all comes from tags/licenses/permits/etc. not a penny comes from idaho tax revenue. they have a challenge when it comes to generating revenue and balancing their budget. yes, they are far from perfect, but regardless, you have to realize funding does not grow on trees...especially for them. hope they can make some much needed changes to help generate more funding. sorry to go off topic...

Not sure who these people are you refer to, but gives a select few a reason to play big shot and slam people. Oh, was that suppose to be funny?

Deep forks, great answer. It would be nice if they got all that money which I think Idaho does. Utah unfortunatly is a general fund thing.

Good answer. If you're a 10 year old.

Perchalong,
Your idea of humor is nether humorous or appropriate. A little courtesy, or even an apology might be an improvement. A lot of us have either questioned this same thing or thought about it.

FlyGoddess,
I don't know for sure but I think the answer is pretty much of a combination of what you have been told so far.

On the ice more than one rod allows people to search several depths, but I don't think it is often that they actually are catching on all rods. It also allows for additional chances to harvest fish as they can catch on a bait when they aren't right there holding the rod. Hence also the restriction on additional ice rods in lakes that have special length restrictions etc.

F&G usually stocks many of the popular ice fishing waters in the fall to allow for that additional harvest.

I think they don't automatically allow two rods in the rest of the season for several reasons. If everyone was using two rods it would put more pressure on many of the waters. Bank fishers that use two rods are usually using bait of some kind on the one that is sitting. Which means more harvest or more moralities of small fish that have been gut hooked. Either way an increased pressure on the fishery.

On the other hand I think many of the people who buy two rod permits that use boats fish with lures. Many are trolling and there is more lip hooked fish that way than deep hooked.

I am not saying harvesting is bad. It isn't. What I am trying to say is that if you increase the harvesting, you need to plan for it and increase the stocking. I think the two pole permit is help to pay for the increases that would be needed for additional stocking and other needs like enforcement.

The way I see it is that to allow two poles all year around would increase the need for more fish, without a way to pay for them.

Anyway just my opinion.

I have found that in the winter it gives you a lot more exercise when using five poles for not many more fish. I think there ought to be a limit on how many Jaw jackers a person should use. I did make an imitation to a Jaw jacker after fishing with Curt last winter and they are highly effective, but most of the fish caught with the device were very easy to release.
When using two poles in the summer bait fishing you had better be prepared to take the fish home. Just my experience and nothing more.
Perchalong, that comment was inappropriate!

Oh, was that suppose to be funny?

about as funny as your last thread complaining about idaho using a calander year for new license fees instead of a 365 day method as it would suit you better because you don't fish in the winter

[/quote]

in lieu of an apology to someone that doesn't like idaho's policies but comes on an idaho board to repeatedly complain, how about you pull my membership instead.
i personally think the god should apologize to idaho.

I have got to throw in my two cents but what I really want to say isn't going to be posted.
Perchalong, you are the only one complaining and it is really to bad you just don't see it or get it.
I guess some of us are now complaining, but only about having to sort through your posts to see something worthwhile.
I see a question raised out of curiousity here while the other post you speak of was basically the same thing until others jumped on it and attacked it.

You bring up a good point. I like the way the jaw jackers work too. They really improve the hooking in the mouth instead of the fish swallowing it. That faster hook set is a good thing especially for places like Chesterfield where the limit is two fish, but you can still have 5 poles.
[signature]
This is straying from topic now and I'm not helping keep it on topic, but here goes.

I personally think all automatic hook setting devices should be outlawed. To each their own. Since it is legal, I'd probably use one or two if they weren't so expensive. But if I could vote on it, I'd vote for them to be outlawed.
