Here is a Fish and Game video explaining how they salvaged the fish while the work on the dam was going on. I thought it was interesting and a well thought out plan.

Interesting post, WR. Mike

Thanks for posting that!

I loved how the "holding tanks" were just garbage cans

I found it interesting that they salvaged all the nonnative trout but didnt bother "salvaging" the native suckers that were rolling all through the current.

It may be that the "netter" was filming at that moment and not netting any fish.. maybe just showing how the shocking worked. I obviously don't know for sure, you would have to ask them, but I wouldn't just take what you saw on the video as an actual moment of the operation.

Could be. It was just something as a fishery biologist I noticed. Throughout the netting and releasing there were only trout.

May be moot anyway. Not sure how extensive the refab is but theres probably enough water coming in and going out to keep them alive through repairs.

I find it interesting that there are 417 views on this subject. Imagine if everyone who looked at information on BFT made a positive contribution to the discussions on here how much closer we would be to "World Peace." At least among fishermen....

And did you just have this dream last night? [Wink]
This also shows that the net can destroy fishing holes. Also very fragile, but most don't care.

Shove him in the shallow water before he gets too deep!

Agreed Seen it first hand, sensitive areas need to be handled by pm as there is a handful of contributors and many that lurk and use the information never contribute.
oh and neat video [cool]

Cool video, I had a friend who was involved with the salvage. I did an electroshocking fish survey with the F&G a few years ago and it was a blast. I would do it again in a heart beat. I wonder how much of a difference these salvages make to the downstream population? I fish that stretch of the river a lot and fish density never seems to be a problem. But imagine the public relations nightmare if they didn't do it. Don't get me wrong, I am glad they saved the fish and I would have liked to have helped. It's just a good idea to do these type of things

Regarding the whole project. I was up there when they were draining the reservoir and the sediment load down stream had me concerned for a while. But the experts said it was within expectations and shouldn't hurt the fishery...I guess we will find out soon enough. Bring on the Drakes!

As for the view to post ratio. I lurked for a long time, then took the plunge. However it didn't take me long to notice that when you work up the courage to post something, you can get hammered pretty quickly. Maybe I am gun shy, but it has been my experience as of late, that the longer a thread lives the higher the probability that it will degenerate into name calling. As a result, I have greatly reduced how often I visits sites and especially how much I post. It just is not as much fun as it used to be. I guess we wont save the world today

Cheers
