NMMA President Thom Dammrich, who drew 160 members of the recreational boating industry to Chicago in mid-December for a "Recreational Boating Stakeholder Growth Summit," will address Boating Writers International (BWI) members and industry guests during an annual meeting Friday, February 17 at the Miami International Boat Show. The meeting will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Miami Beach Convention Center, Room A 201-202.

Dammrich's remarks will focus on what he hopes will be the media's role in an emerging, decade-long effort to revitalize and grow the boating industry. At the Chicago gathering, attended by a wide cross-section of boating stakeholders from bankers to consumer organizations, dealers to publication editors, a facilitated program included emerging recreational boating trends and changing demographics in the U.S. Noted Dammrich, "I think a lot of participants were shocked at some of the missed opportunities, industry trends, and overall need for our industry to adjust to the changing population."

BWI hosted a discussion on these issues entitled "Expanding The Boating Universe Beyond Middle-aged White Males" during the 2008 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show that was produced and moderated by BWI Director, Michael Sciulla. While BWI may have broken the ice on demographic growth issues, the Chicago summit was exhaustive in its scope and plans are underway for a follow-up meeting during March in which Dammrich hopes to build an industry-wide coalition. Much of the material and continuing updates can be accessed at: consensus.fsu.edu/Boat-Summit/index.html.

BWI's Annual Writing Contest award ceremony will kick off the Miami meeting as the 48 winners of top stories for 2011 will be recognized and $16,000 in awards presented. A "Grand Prize Writing Award" for 2010 will also be given. The National Marine Electronics Association is the breakfast sponsor for the overall BWI program: its executive director, Bruce Angus, will offer an outlook for the 2012 market and introduce NMEA's new consumer guide to marine electronics.

The entire event is open to the marine community and requires no ticket for admission.

BWI is a non-profit professional organization consisting of writers, broadcasters, editors, photographers, publishers, public relations specialists and others in the communications profession associated with the boating industry. Those seeking the service of active marine journalists can find a listing of members under the "Directories" tab at www.bwi.org.
