NICE! I was down at the Hemingway Marina a couple of weeks ago and saw a couple that size cruising the dock for popcorn.

Wonder in there are any plans to reopen Overton Beach now that the water level has risen? I would like to be able to launch the kayak in that area but the road off the main highway is closed.

Whats up with Overton? Is the scenery or fishing worth the drive?

In its day, Overton Beach was a popular place because of its large sandy beaches and great access to the Upper Arm. The scenery is beautiful and the Virgin River flows into the Mead near by. There was a mobile home park and it housed a nice marina with a ranger station and general store.

The bass fishing was great in that area and there is a good crappie population as well.

When the water at Mead fell so low, the Nat'l Park Service had to close it down, the marina was moved and finually the road closed to prevent vandalism and theft. There was a water treatment plant that has since been mothballed because of the low water levels.

Yes, it was worth the drive.

In researching ,I found NPS may open it back up by 2012 Memorial Day weekend. They were waiting to see if the water levels would maintain a consent and also for the 2012 budget approval. The problem is having a ranger on site since Echo Bay personnal was reduced to three people for enforcement and clean up. Also it will take $50,000 - $70,000 to restart the treatment plant and return the public restrooms. The Park Service is also building an Entrance Fee Station on the north side near Overton.

What i love about the overton arm is how you can get away from all the wacko's that just got a boat or jet ski that have no respect for anyone.

the water is clearer to me up there and yes the sand beaches are awesome!!!

not to mention I caught my biggest striper there last year.

I was told by the guys who run Echo Bay, they are going to open the overton beach road for memorial day weekend
