JACKSON - Above average temperatures the past few weeks have led to great crappie fishing in many Mississippi Delta lakes. "Crappie move into shallow water to spawn based on water temperatures, and many oxbows are warming up quickly," said Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) fisheries biologist Nathan Aycock. "This is triggering fish to move towards their shallow water spawning ground, and lots of big crappie are being caught in water one to three feet deep."
Lake Washington and Bee Lake are hot right now, with reports of anglers reaching their 30 fish per day limit of crappie not uncommon. Several crappie over three pounds have been caught recently at Lake Washington, which rivals the largeflood control reservoirs as the go-to lake for trophy crappie. Oxbows inside the levee like Lake Beulah andLake Whittington have been slower to warm up due to high water from the Mississippi River, but the connected oxbows should be turning on soon as the river slowly falls over the next couple of weeks.
