Hello everybody, I am new to fishing and i need help choosing a rod. I settled on Ugly Stik brand which my friends recommend, however i cant decide on the model etc.
I was just wondering, how "bendy" is Ugly Stik 9' Medium vs Ugly Stik 9' medium heavy? Also, which affordible (under 35) spinning reel would you recommend for that rod? Thanks.
P.s. both rods are two-piece.

Hello Ivan,
What type of fishing will you mostly be doing (bass, trout, etc..)?

Thanks for replying!
Actually, I would like to do different kinds of fishing, including fish as big as salmon and as small as crappie. I also like to fish for carp so I need pretty good casting. I understand that a rod cannot be good for all of these uses, but it can be acceptable. I used to fish for salmon with a 10$ pole and it was fine.
But anyways, I was just wondering which of the Ugly Stik rods is LESS flexible, Medium, or Medium Heavy. I am really liking Ugly Stik SPL 1100 90 (4-20lb, 1/8-3/4oz) which is listed as Medium action. But I am worried that it will be too Flexible and Im buying it online so can't physically check. I think there is a similar Ugly Stik but with Medium Heavy action, so maybe I should get that one....
Thanks

Hello Ivan,
Yeh, I hear what your saying and agree for the most part. You can really cover a lot of ground with one rod and account for a lot of variables with line and reel selections. I personally like a little more action in my rod so would go with the medium (which would be more flexible) over the medium heavy, not to mention with a 4-20 lb rating on the line you can account for the species of fish your targeting by changing the line. I haven't personally fished the rod your looking at but if it's rated for 20lb test I wouldn't worry about too much action/flexibility, it should be good for the carp as well! I guess the deciding factor for me would be if the rod still has good action on the crappie, trout, etc... and will hold up solid with bigger carp and cats, I would prefer that over a heavier action rod that I just don't feel the fight on the smaller fish but have a bit more security when a really big fish is on (which I as I mentioned you can deal with by heavier line and a bit looser drag).
This is a lot of personal preference but I hope it helps and we'll be looking forward to checking out your fish reports, TIGHT LINES!!

Thanks Mike,
That was really helpful. I think I will go with the Medium action.

yea it depends on what your doing..
I use to like my 7' skeete reese before valley girl broke it.
A bass that will break our state record ... mabye the worlds.
I have hooked her 5 times now and I'm a good bass man.
she has broke two poles and 5 lines.
I think it don't matter what gear you are using.
when you hook a fish that is 15lb or 19lb.
Everything you think you know about catching bass goes out the window.
It has for me 5 times in a row.
two pro rods broke..
14lb birkley tlinene broke..
keeps happening with this fish.
I hook her more than anyone else and she owned me over and over.
