Saw how nice it was on Saturday and decided to go fishing on the spur of the moment. I live in Boise and didn't want to drive to Strike because I got skunked there last weekend. I had some old cut bait in the freezer from last year, so I decided to go to Wilson Ponds in Nampa. The back pond holds catfish along with bass and sunfish. It's so small and shallow it warms up pretty quickly. It was kind of windy, but the temps were in the 70s. Lots of people were there fishing the stocked trout ponds with their kids, but not having much luck according to those I asked. I was the only one on the back pond except for a guy with his kid and a few people who strolled around casting for bass.
I got my first cat within 10 minutes, before I even had time to set up my second pole. About 15 minutes after that, the wind changed direction and a terrible windstorm came up. The temps dropped about 20 degrees and the wind was blowing hard enough to knock my chair over. No rain, but it was pretty miserable.
I went for two hours without any action and decided to leave. Just as I was packing up my stuff, I got a double. Both fish hit pretty much simultaneously. If you think it's easy to land two cats alone with no net in a ripping windstorm, you're sorely mistaken. But I did manage to land them.
The wind finally died down about an hour before dark, and I got two more. The last fish of the day was a 12" largemouth, who must have been pretty damn hungry to inhale a big chunk of squawfish on a 4/0 circle hook.
I still have fillets in the freezer from last year, so I released all the fish. I love cats. They're not fussy, they fight hard and they taste great. What more could an angler ask for?
Here's some pics of the catch. For scale, those are 12" boards:
