Well, took the big step and decided to try my hand at tournament fishing this weekend at the UBF qualifier at Lake Powell. I signed up as a non-boater and was paired with some really great guys all weekend long.

Saturdays tourney was great. The weather was awesome and the fishing was fair. I did have a ten fish day, but only two fell into the tourney specs. Weighed 5.6 in my first try and took 10th out of 17 non boaters (hey, at least I didn't finished last!). The problem with my fishing on Saturday was that I could not get the fish to bite consistently on one bait. In retrospect, I think I only caught two fish on the same bait. The spawn was not quite on yet and the fish are still in transition to the shallow water, but it shouldn't be long before they are on the beds.

Sunday was a bust or should I say Bluster! 40mph sustained winds made fishing as well as boating an adventure to say the least. Let's just say 'Deadliest Catch' kind of stuff.

All-in-all it was a great experience and I am looking forward to doing it again. Most everyone I met was willing to give me hints and tips. The amount of information I gained this weekend reminds me of when my son went from Little League baseball to comp-ball. The learning curve definitely makes a huge jump and the knowledge base is far greater. You should give it a try!

What was the fee for the boater and what was it as a non boater?

I may be wrong, but I think the fee's for the qualifier where the same for both boater and non-boater, $75 each day, $150 total, plus any side pots you want to be in (big fish, etc.)

That doesn't seem too bad at all. What was the purse?
