I am taking my son to Flaming Gorge on Wednesday evening for some R&R and fishing. We will be camping in a tent and fishing from the shore (leaving the tubes & toon at home this trip due to space). Any ideas where we could camp and fish?
I was considering around Sheep Creek, but it has been SO long since I have been up there, and I have never fished the reservoir before. Open to other suggestions as I really have no idea.
Any help appreciated. My son is trying to finish up his fishing merit badge and earn some camping nights for his eagle. We need to catch and release a fish or two and also catch and keep a fish to eat to finish up the merit badge. Always wanted to fish the gorge for a chance at a real nice bow or two.
Thanks!

Sheep creek is a good place to fish and camp. Not sure if campground is open yet, however. Second alternative is to camp in stateline cove near Lucerne Marina. We have some fresh snow on the ground right now, so "be prepared!" Nights are still in he 20's and low 30's.

Bring good tent stakes it's going to one windy night Wednesday unless the weather station is wrong. Someone else just posted some help on FG fishing from shore. Sheep Creek was recommended by many. That is where I would fish if it were me.
I would check the weather and wind before i pitched a tent up there this time of year.

Depending on the day and how warm it is, Sheep Creek has been running muddy which could influence the bite there. On top of what the others recommended, you could also consider the lower lake near the dam. Dripping Springs Campground is open and you're only a few miles from the Green River at Little Hole and about 9-miles from Mustang Ridge launch area which would give you access to the Gorge. You should find some good fishing for rainbows near the mouth of Sunny Cove (on the way down the Mustang Ridge road). You can either bait fish off the rocks or wander around that area casting jigs to catch rainbows. I like casting small jigs (3/8 oz) with tubes or grubs in crayfish colors or Gulp in minnow colors/shapes. Most of the hits come as the bait is falling through the water column. Good luck!

I have fished sheep creek six times this year, and the fishing is spotty (I caught my limit last tuesday and on Wednesday I took 12 scouts and we only caught one fish all together). The creek is really muddy right now. I have had good success along the cliffs on the northern side of swim beach wandering up and down the shore casting spoons, spinners and rapalas. There are a lot of boulers to hold the fish and take your lures so bring plenty. Its a good spot to camp too, just don't get too close to the shore.

Thanks you guys! I was so excited to take a couple days off during spring break and take my boy out for a Father/Son trip and earn a merit badge etc. Unfortunately, it seems everytime we go camping the wind howls like crazy.
Last try was Jordanelle first of November. The wind blew so hard all night long. We left first thing the next morning just as the snow started moving in.
I can handle the cold a lot better than that doggon wind that is for certain. Same with the boy.
So, if you wanted to take your boy for this kind of activity and lived in Davis County, where would you go?
Thanks again and I really appreciate the help with FG. I will go up there a different weekend if we decide to bail on this one due to wind/weather.

I would give it a few months (if you can wait) and head up Fairview canyon. There are enough great lakes up there that you are guaranteed to catch some fish (Electric Lake, Cleveland, Fairview, Gooseberry, Bench's Pond, Miller's Flat to only name a few.)

I'd hit the lower elev. lakes like Utah Lake and try the warm water species. There's camping on the west shore, and the bugs and other minor troubles aren't bad at all yet.

Well my boy and I made it up there and the weather cooperated. We did pretty good and picked up a few really nice fisha and a few smaller "normal" size bows.
Berkley Gulp power bait performed best, but did pick up a few on a rapala and a Jake's Spin-a-lure.
Ran into Depthcharge. Thanks for not "kicking us" out of "your" spot [

Glad you guys picked up a few too. Dropped off quickly after you left. Only picked up one more.
