I thought I would try my luck with Walleye this year. Got skunked my first 3 attempts earlier this year but tonight i finally got one. I am not familiar with Walleye but he was 22 inches. (Is that small? medium?) I dont have a weight on him, I dont have a scale yet but working on it.

I know that the eye spawn has either just started or getting ready to. I was prepared to let any big mamas go but luckily I caught a male.

Since this is my first Walleye any good tips on how to prepare it and eat it? I usually just fry my fish in butter and lemon but if there are any good recipes i would sure like to try some new ones out.

walleye don't need a lot of help, in the taste dept from recipes. A nice fry or broil, and classic butter/lemon/salt/pepper would do ya fine. There are of course a thousand good ways to prep walleye.

take your fillets of him on cut em into 1 or 2 inch chunks and dip them in a very lite beer batter and then roll those pieces in crushed up cornflakes, soooo good and simple.

Where'd you catch it?

and on what - - - if you don't mind saying.

Males are skinnier, but I'd guess if it's almost two foot - probably 2 to 3 pounds - easy? If it was a fat female - might push more like 4. But I don't "know" Walleye...

I know I've met two foot channel cats that were over 5lbs, but those were chunky fat female channels (I like to call them my "fat bottom girls" - make the rocking world go round).
Remember to take the cheeks out! Good sized chunk of meat on the walleyes face. You can stick your knife in and make a 1" cut along the back of it, then just stick your finger in and pull it out. The skin usually comes off when you pull it out. Dont throw it a way... best meat on the whole fish!

Almond crusted walleye is very good but my favorite is the Bass Pro Spicy fish batter.

Good stuff.

Congrats

Congrats Cericr, that is a pretty healthy walleye. It looks about 4 pounds to me in the picture. I would have guessed a female. You cant hardly ruin walleye no matter how you cook it, it will be good. Deep frying is probably the best of all. They sure are pretty when they are darker green like that one. Looks like you were jungle fishing. Keep after em and catch some more now you are on a role. Fishon

I caught him on the south Dike in Utah Lake State park. I was using a 3' green and orange curly tail grub.

Good on ya. Nice EYE

you should save the head of the eye and put it outside to dry for a few days and then prop the jaw open and cut the jaw off the head, something you can always remember it by since not alot people get eyes at all. i did that with the eye i iced at DC in march attached to a piece of cool wood and put in on my wall. see pic
