Ok people, I want to take my cousin (10 Years old) to fish at Lake Mead and get him hooked into some big carp from shore...While planning our trip, I realized I have no Idea how to target carp specifically. I know corn and bread balls work but What type of hooks do you guys use? Also How would I go about chumming for them? Can somebody with some experience chime in and give me some tips on tackle, bait, chum and good carp fishing spots from shore at Mead?? Thanks!

syn city looks to be the local expert on carp. I used to put a egg slip sinker on my line above a swivel. then about 2 feet down from the swivel i would tie on just a big plain eagle claw bait hook and completely cover it with corn kernels. seamed like the slip sinker helped keep them from feeling resistance and not drop it. I never really did any chumming but i heard alot of people throw out cans of creamed corn. others just tossed extra corn kernels. I also heard carp like strawberry flavoring too. I kinda miss catching those big smelly guys, they fight like crazy.
I see millions at government and at boxcar-crawdad cove

Dang, I typed a big ol' tutorial and lost it. here is a short version.
1. Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap size 1 or 2 (highly recomended)
2. Can of corn
3. Toss out small handfuls of corn and fish right on top off them
4. loosen drag so fish can (it will) run after picking up bait
5. Once fish is on, hold line so rod sets hook and tighten drag a bit (don't overtighten)
6. Carp will make multiple runs, especially as it gets close to shore
7. Play fish to wear it out as much as possible before attempting to land
8. Areas near Marinas tend to be good for carp (callville, hemenway)
Good luck

[cool] I'm no expert but thanx for the compliment montanininnv... but I have to say, when I do target carp I have not failed yet.(knock on wood) chumming is definitely essential, bring at least 1 can of corn. my whole family fishes all day and chums all day on one regular can of corn. I set up different ways, "drop shot" style with the sinker on the bottom and a snelled hook about a foot above the weight. I use #2 or #4 eagle claw snells or owner #2 circles I snell up myself.. I also set up on a "Carolina" style egg sinker, bead, swivel, with about 18" of leader, same size hooks. I have even thrown a split shot 18" above the hook on my ultra light with 4 lb test. there is no need to cast out far only a few feet out should suffice. basically I cast out as far out as I chum. I just recently picked up a toy sling shot made for shooting water balloons and have been using that to get the chum out, thats super fun. I do suggest getting a strong pole holder or just hold on to the rod, cause when they hit they take off like a rocket!!! my son has gone into the lake numerous times after rods pulled in by carp. as far as a rod set up I fish with everything as light as 5 ft UL rod with 4lb test, up to 20lb test and a 9 ft medium/heavy salmon/steelhead rod. just have a loose drag for those powerful runs on light gear. thats about all I have.. if u want to get creative u can try making your own chum. I make a chum mixture of cream corn, kernal corn, oat meal, corn meal, strawberry exract or kool-aid. u can either leave it loose or add more corn meal or flour and make chum balls. if u have anymore questions hit me up for anything. good luck out there post them pix up[fishon]

Did you have any luck getting him into some carp?

My cousin ended up having to reschedule because of some school stuff... Instead my wife and I ended up driving up to the Circleville area of Utah to do some fly fishing... I will post a report on the carp when I end up taking him.

Hi I usually go there on vacation,I actually took more time out to fish than to wake board.[crazy]
Its amazing all the carp right there at the marina!.I say try your luck first by feeding them at the dock, see if there is any bait they might ignore,or really enjoy, try your baits on them first to be sure.I've thrown bread and they go nuts! . I lost a big catfish there!
But there is no fishing allowed at the marina

I so wanted to get my rod LOL would have limited out on 20"+ stripers within an hour[fishon]
