Sunday,10/12/03:
Hit the water early (5:30). Headed over to Gypsum Wash to net some shad. After about twenty throws I had a live well full of shad and wet clothes. On about my third toss I stumbled and went right into the Lake. I ALWAYS wear my personal floation device when I'm out on my boat alone, so yes I had it on when I stood up in the three feet deep of water next to my boat. No one was around and it was dark so I don't know why I'm even making this admission. It must have been my bum knee, sure. Anyway, as a couple of guides were showing up to net shad I was heading out to try my luck. I fished until 10:00 am and ended up with a striper over four pounds and one small striper. A slow day but a very nice day to be on the water. The anglers I talked to seemed to have the same experence.Maybe it's the full moon, sure.

ps me and my bro used to toss the net for mullet in florida for bait, mainly to fish for snook, it always produced comic results . . .

Wish I would of been there! HA! Still tired from hauling rocks, huh? Was Don there to fish you out? Man, I miss all the good stuff.

Sounds like makin' bait was good but the fishin' sucked. Are you freezing that bait for this winter? I'm gonna need some bait when I'm down there and don't want to use no stinkin' frozen anchovies.

No, I was all by myself.

I freeze what shad I don't use. I think frozen anchovies or sardines are better than frozen shad in a lot of ways. Frozen whole shad does not sink when used for chum, they float for awhile and attract gulls. You need to soak them first to make them sink fast. Don likes to chop up his chum and soak it in bass oil. Shad, anchovie, sardines, we use them all. We buy sardines at an Aisan market, they are bigger and are fresh not frozen. When we are unsuccessful at netting shad we use sardines. We have done fairly well with them.

I did'nt see any topwater action happen at all on Sunday so I guess it's time to be ready for bait fishing. I hope it is not over yet, I love to throw lures.

Let me know when you are ready to fish, I'll try not to fall off the boat.
