So after going to the expo today ive decided I want to start tying flys. I dont know where to start besides get a fly tying kit. Do you guys have any suggestions. I want to tie mostly trout flies. If anybody would like to teach me this summer let me know or if you have an extra vice you might want to let me borrow for a while to make sure I like it. I dont have alot of time the next few weeks but after that no more school for a while. Pm me if you would like help Ill go buy the materials if you tell me what I need lol.

I got the one of the Wapsi kits last fall. It had everything to get started. The vice isn't great but it does the job. It didn't come with a whip finishing tool but I picked one up for like $5. Also picked up an extra bobbin and some nice scissors. It comes with all of hooks and materials to get started. I highly recomend this kit.

Steve, I had such a blast today. Normally it is pulling teeth to get me to tie,but I really didn't wanna stop today.
Maybe we can pick one or so days a month to meet up somwhere and I can show and help you tie some popular flies. I would love it.
I will second the Wapsi Kit as far as kits go. I used a viselike that for years. I will also keep an ear open for a deal on a good vise.

Think I paid like $80. There are plenty of sites that sell those kits. Im pretty sure Sportsmans sells it too.

Get a vise, tools some bobbins (don't skimp there, get teflon or ceramic) thread and I can get you going.

I LOVE tying my own flies--- and until recently I've never sold any, for 2 reasons- its easier to tie a good fly for yourself than for someone else...and I've only been tying for 10 years, and I would wanna sell anyone "crap-ass" practice flies.
Get the kit, and buy a crap load of the worst hooks available! You won't wanna learn on the pricey "good" hooks.
