I had a few hours yesterday afternoon so I decided to try my luck on the Provo. I had a few hits right when I arrived and landed two in the first 20-30 minutes. They were on red copper johns. After the second fish I decided to head up the river, I haven't fly fished very often and never in this spot so I wanted to see more of the river. After a while and very few hits it started to get windy and I started back to my original spot once I got there I caught two more and called it a day. Four total in two hours felt really good but I regret ever leaving my spot. Can't be sure it would have stayed hot the entire time but maybe next time I will try a little longer. I have heard it both ways that after a couple in a hole you should move on because they are probably spooked I also have heard stay where the fishing is hot. I'm curious to know what you guys think? How long should I stay in a hole if it's hot and how long if it's not? If I have had success earlier on a particular fly how long should I stay with it? I have been switching to the same pattern for both flies after I have caught a couple on one pattern. Is that the right thing to do or should I keep variety? Are there patterns that go to together better than others? Should I always have the bigger fly above the smaller? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry no pictures I got my camera wet last week and was not able to get it working again. Didn't want to risk using the phone. Probably going to have to get a water proof camera soon.

Aww the rice trick didn't work? Well there is Inkley's (however you spell that place). Check them out 1st.

Great report.

Rice trick hasn't worked yet. Camera turns on and everything seems normal with one major exception, the screen is black and every pic is black. Currently it's still in rice and I am hopefull but getting less so by the day. It was a couple of years old and it would be cool to get a waterproof one. But not as cool as spending the money on my newest hobby, fly fishing. Sounds like you are getting as in to it as I have been the last few weeks? Have you spent any time on rivers or are you just into lakes?

Spent 2 consecutive falls on the middle provo back in the 90's with 2 tiny minnows. Hung up that rod till last year a guy showed me what flies worked at the sandy pond. Caught like 2 rainbows. The past 2 weeks I have caught so many more! Yesterday I got 23!

That's awesome I read your report. Sounds like a good time. I haven't given up on lakes. I love strawberry during ice off. I'm hoping to make it there this weekend and try some wooly buggers on the fly rod. I have always had success there on black marabou jigs. So seems like wooly buggers will work.

If I'm fishing a hole, and I'm catching fish...I won't change fly patterns until the fish stop wanting the ones I'm throwing.

I am always throwing 2 flies(unless I'm throwing streamers), so the fish have told me what they are keyed in on. Unless I'm catching 50/50 on top and bottom fly, I know what pattern they want, so I 'll go different size, before I'll go different color, and the 2nd tie is always a bigger size.

If that doesn't work, I'll go upstream to the next closet hole, and give the original hole a 20 minute break before I'll try again. If someone else steps into the hole to fish, I don't care, cause I've already caught some out of there, and the hole is spooked, and I'll give it 20 minutes after they leave.

As for which fly in what position- I'll keep scuds/sowbugs, stonefly- on the bottom, and the mayfly, midge,( or what ever is hatching) above.

Hope some of that helps.
