Had the opportunity to take Nick, a 13 yr old young gun, friend of Catfish 1.
We started out fishing a spawning flat where we quickly caught 4 keepers,
which Nick caught 3 of the 4. Moved to a deeper water brush piles where I
had recently caught big crappie. No takers here. Went to shoot a reliable
dock, that is known to produce. Nick has great dock shooting skills. We
killed 9 3/4 crappie here, with some keepers in the mix. Nick was having a
blast here and did not want to leave this gold mine. We departed here to look
for big fish. As soon as we hit the main lake, we encountered 3-4 foot waves.
Headed to the creek for some calmer water. Fished a wooden dock with lots of posts,
where we caught several crappie, several shorts with some keepers. Im
fishing my usual 1/32 oz jig on 4 lb test when I stick a beast, and for the next
30 minutes I get abused. It starts running around every post, and going where ever
it pleases. I ran the boat all the way under this dock, through a narrow opening
chasing this fish. Got a glimpse of him as it briefly sufaced. Appeared to be a
flathead cat 20-30 lbs. Had to climb up on this dock, where Nick handed me the rod,
got the fish to open water, as working the fish upward, with bubbles appearing,
SNAP! line broke, game over. He now has a jig for a nose ring! I was so mad I felt I
needed to break something, but held back to be a good example. Moved onto other docks,
where things improved, I quickly lost the prop off the trolling motor,
the second one in two weeks. This lead to anchoring and tying off to docks, SWEET!
Had the pleasure of meeting Spurhunter, and shared my cat adventure with him.
Nick and I finished with 17 keepers, and I look forward to another trip with him
when the bite is better!
