Full Version: Why the flood on Diamond Fork?

I'm just wondering if anyone knows why CUWC decided to suddenly flood Diamond Fork and how long it will likely last. Couldn't find anything on their website. I guess I could call if I get time during working hours. Looking at USGS data it all looks to becoming out of Strawberry Tunnel as the flows right above Syar tunnel on 6th Water bumped from 40 to an unprecedented 200 cfs. Rarely kayakers will do 6th below Strawberry Tunnel. It's pretty amazing for such a small creek if you ever get to see them run it. While these flows may make that class 4 /5 run into class 6 it sure sucks for the fishing. Here's a youtube of yaks on the upper run known as Unborn Soul . Flows looks to be about a measly 30-35 cfs during the filming so you can imagine what 200 cfs must be like.

For all of you that like to fish Diamond Fork and it's tribs, class 6 whitewater just ended a few minutes ago -44 cfs out of Strawberry Tunnel. I kept forgetting to call during business hours so I emailed today and got a reply. Ands heads up when higher flows are needed later they'll shoot up above normal out of Strawberry Tunnel partially to meet the need. Here's their reply
Paul,
I'm not sure if you are aware that we have been performing work on the valves at the Sixth Water Flow Control Structure. The valves have been taken off line and as a result we have used the Strawberry Tunnel for deliveries. One valve will be back in service soon and the other will be operation in the fall. By copy of this email I am notifying others who can provide you with additional information.

One valve is back in service as of a few minutes ago. Flows above minimums are being transferred through the night and into tomorrow to the structure at the mouth of Diamond Fork canyon. The minimum release from the Strawberry Tunnel will remain at minimum until demands are above 400 cfs. Then flows will increase at the Straw. Tunnel for flows above 400 cfs. Final repairs will be completed this fall.

That's good to know, thanks for spreading the word. I'd like to hit that with you again this year, not that I'll be able to keep up just that it's fun to try[Tongue]

What's wrong can't keep up with an old man? I was sucking a bit of wind hiking at 10,000 the other day and got to get back in shape. I guess stretches of 2 feet of snow didn't make it any easier. I'll probable go tomorrow but won't be bushwhacking over that mountain quite yet. I'll be looking for big cutts moving upstream. Not sure how the highs flows until last night will affect things but worth a try.
