I just got back from 5 days on lake Powell. It is such a special fishery. I feel so blessed to have it in this state. I was a stow away on this trip. My dad didn't really have room for me on the boat so I was relegated to fishing from my u tube. I figured if I was going to tube it I should return all the way to my roots and fly fling the whole time. I will only fish with flies I tie myself. thats one of the reasons I don't flyfish a ton anymore. I don't love tying. I didn't want to deal with weighting flies or tying clauser heads so I bought a bunch of sixteenth once lead heads and tied up a bunch of custum maribous in olives blacks and browns. They turned out really good. I know some of the purist out there won't classify this as fly fishing. Your probably right[:p].
Well at least the fish liked them. Over the coarse of the trip I caught literally hundreds of fish. I caught eight species on my fly rod. One of them was a knew addition; walleye. I've been fishing for the slabs down there since the high water flooded all the brush but I'm stilled amazed by the amount and size. I've caught numerous 2 1/2 pound crappie in the fall. I didn't get any that big this trip but a lot of them will be this fall. We kept enough for a fish fry every day (mostly striper and walleye). The last morning we decided to keep everything we could because of requests for fish from family and friends. In three hours my stringer had 32 fish on it and I let a lot of male crappie go to get my ten females. What an awesome trip.
