man what a difference the cool week made. we went 2 weeks ago and got 20 in the boat with a 3.5 and a 3.25. then the cool wet week came in. couldnt find a fish in the same area. water was 8 to 10 degrees coooler. moved out to about 6 to 8 ft of water and we ended up with 7. just get hot already and stay that way.

[indent]That shallow water really heats and cools quickly. Glad you adapted and found a few fish!

I ended the month of May with a bummer - wading a flat and coming up empty. I did fall in twice, and am beginning to wonder how much longer an 80 year old man can wade through the weed and brush filled flats of Lake Lowell.
I fished Lake Lowell every day but two (one trip to the river and one day of rest), and probably due to the early warm weather I had one of the best April's ever in 50+ years on the lake. In the 13 days of fishing, most of which are only 3-4 hours, I landed 189 largemouth, with nine fish over 17", four between 18-19", and one a bit over 20". That fish was in the 5 lb area, as these fish seem to be in excellent shape.
I reaffirmed my belief that I can catch more big fish in Lake Lowell by wading, than by trying to pole my boat into pockets of brush, or around beds of smartweed. When those fish are in 3' or less water they spook easily and stealth is required. The downside is that you can only cover so much water wading, and it becomes near impossible when the smartweed beds become thick.

Lowell sounds a lot like Twin Lakes over here on the east side of the state (no smallies though unfortunately). I usually end up ditching my tube and wading it too. I generally like 7' rods, but I actually bought a shorter 6' rod this winter just for pitching plastics to pockets in the trees and brush there in the spring. It has to be some of the funnest fishing there is.
Same thing here, great fishing last week, but yesterday I worked my butt off for 12, and only about 5 were even a foot or better. I'm pretty happy with the new rod though. This week's weather isn't looking any better. I'm bummed because I just went from working M-F, to only working three long shifts during the week. Now it's nasty out everyday I have a chance to fish.
