I am setting up 2 poles to be used mainly for catfishing and other big fish, so i went with some braided line. Spiderwire Stealth braid, moss green and 30# test line. I have used Spiderwire fusion in the past but always had casting issues. I am having the same issue with this line as well. I go to cast and stops about 5 feet, and thats a good cast. So am i putting on too much line, or is the reel. I put on maybe 40 feet worth and I have it on an older Johnson reel, which I have cleaned up and lubed. I have read the reviews on this line and apparently everyone loves it cause it casts great, but not that way for me so far, even though it is some good looking line.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I fling my pole in the lake.

Is the reel set up for 30lb line? You need to put on more than 40ft of line as well. Fill it up. What are you throwing for a lure? Not enough wieght on 30lb line may make it cast a short distance. I have 30lb braid on my saltwater rigs and it casts a mile with plugs or sluggos.

I think I have more than 40 feet, its about 3/4 full on the spool, I just tied the line to a tree and walked it out and it was at least 40 ft. When I was testing it out all I had was a one of them big sinkers used for catfish. I wont be using many lures on this pole, itll mostly be catfishing so itll be nasty meat and stuff like that.
The reel is a Johnson 710b, its an older model.

Reels as a rule hold 125 YARDS of line. If you had trouble with that line before maybe buying a different kind to start with. Does the bail flip over as you cast? Does the line get inbedded into it self? If so it's the line. I use only Fireline. Only use a small amount of preasure on the line when you spool it, like keeping it between two fingers.

Thats why I changed to power pro,those braided lines you speak of were what first came out.I hear alot about the casting issues,I remember myself, that was at least 10 years ago,powerpro,or suffix for me.I think that line swells up or something,once it gets wet thats it,sucks! The original spiderwire and stealth are no good,P.S. if you change to power pro,don't get the 5 or 8 in power pro,it twist bad,sucks also.[

Thanks for the help, but I just transfered the line to an empty spool and put my spiderwire mono back on. The reel is pretty old and doesn't have much to change the drag. I went ahead and bought me a Abu garcia 5500C3 Ambas
eur reel and put the braided line on that. It works perfectly in that one, and the others I was trying was just more hassle. But thanks again for your advice. I just think its not a good idea to put braided on a spincast after all this.

If your using braided line with a spinning reel or baitcaster or whatever. You should put just enough mono just to cover the top of the spool then tie the end of the mono to your braid then finished filling the spool up with mono. When I first switched over to braided line I just threw it on the spoon and noticed it was knotting up not casting correctly and looked like it was digging in to itself. Went back to the tackle shop I got the line at and he told me braided line is notorious for digging in to the spool without putting backing on. I do this with all my rods especially with my baitcasters. So give this a shot I can probably almost guarantee this will work. So put on maybe 10 yards or so or whatever it takes just to cover the top of the spool I use half of the test I am using for my main line so if I have 30lb braid I use 15lb mono. This is what I do everyone is different. Then tie the mono to the braid and fill your spool up this will keep your braid from digging in to itself and it will stay more loose for better casting.
