I found this older bait rod in my basment it says made in has and seems to be in ok shape. It says MOHAWK 3445 tubular fibre glass made in usa H-I horrocks Ibbotson co. Utica N.Y chrome plated stainless steel guides. It is a brownish color with an all cork handle. Can any one help me figure out some information on this rod? It has an Indian head on it also. Just trying to figure out what it is and what reel belongs on it.

Mohawk was a trademark used by Horrocks-Ibbotson on lots of their fishing tackle. Your rod is probably from the 1950s or 60s. H-I was one of the largest manufacturers of inexpensive fishing tackle from the early 1900s until they went out of business, probably in the 1970s.

You can find a reel for the rod on eBay. H-I made lots of inexpensive reels that are not very collectible today, which keeps the cost down. You might even find a Mohawk reel to match with the rod.

I've been collecting antique fishing tackle for around 40 years. If you want I can take a look around my shop and can probably find you a free reel to match up with your rod.

Jeremy, I have been doing too much fishing today, but finally got around to taking a look through some H-I catalogs. Their 1959 catalog shows the Mohawk tubular glass casting rod. It came in 5-1/2 or 6' versions, which sold for $11.50 or $13.00 respectively. They also had 3 spincast versions of the Mohawk that would look very much like their casting rods. Two were 6' and the third 6 1/2'. They sold for $13 to $15. They also had Mohawk rods in their 1966 catalog for similar prices.

So did the spinning rods have the small eyes on them? Only reason im assuming its a bait rod is because of the small eyes all the way up doesnt have the larger guide closer yo.the reel seat but the small one. And according to my measurements its 6'2"

Spincast rods were just like casting rods, but usually a little longer and lighter action. They were made for hooded spincast reels, such as Zebco's.
