Utah Lake - Decided to head for UL at 2pm. Got a text while I was driving on the freeway of a cooler full of white bass from my buddy BFT's In2Fishing. I called him and he said he'd take me on his boat. Met up with him at Lindon Marina after a brief chat with BFT's Bow Hunter 3 and headed to Battle Creek. We anchored up and got to catching. I tried the fly rod for a while but there was no love. Threw my spinner and tye dye crawler combo and BAM got a fish on the 1st cast! Fish after fish went straight into the basket awaiting a chowder feast.

When the action seemed "on" I tossed the fly rod but still no love. Near sunset I joked I might put my fly in one of their mouths and see how they fight. Little did I know that wouldn't be needed. After getting a bite here and there In2Fishing put on Led Zeplin and let me give them hell. Sure enough I got the 1st ever white bass on the fly! I have been wanting to do that since last years spawn and it finally happened! I proceeded to catch 5 total on the fly and had a few lost by dark.

In2Fishing caught 60 white bass and I caught 37 (5 were on the fly). I was using a Roostertail spinner in gold blade, green body, and yellow tail sometimes with a nightcrawler sometimes baitless.

The flies I actually caught the fish on was a Pink Woolybugger (see pic below) and I tried the Clouser Minnow in green and a few other green nasty flies. What an epic day!!!

Cheif would be proud today!

The roostertail never fails on these White Bass

Does this fly look familiar? Maybe resembles a Tube Dude color around these parts?

If there is a will there is a way. 1st ever white bass caught on a fly!

Another White Bass on the fly! Where does the hair end and the reeds begin?

sounds like you have a great time. now if i can only justify driving down there and not get shunk'd i'll love to catch some whittie's!! but driving from north ogden to utah lake eats a lot of gas lol.

I say give it a week, then it will be hot all over the lake! If you ever felt like it you could meet me half way in SLC and I will take you the rest of the way. PM me if you ever feel like making that happen.

Good job.

I'm surprised that I didn't see that hair over the phrag when I went into look at that area but to many people for me.

Worked the outside edge of the weeds and only picked up a half dozen white bass, four bullheads, and eight channels that went from 20' up to 28'. that is the largest cat that I have ever caught and it took about twent minutes to get it in on my light tackle.

Come to think of it I think that it was you guys that was heading into the harbor just after dark as I was making my way in to the bank in my tube.

Yes it probably was. There was some Guns and Roses playing too. Didn't see you but it is good to hear you got some fish on the end of your line.

Welcometo my world, but that isn't a Woolly Bugger so to speak. It is a streamer however, more Matuka style. White is a killer color, and TD has proven PINK.
Good job boys, keep up the good harvest.

Were any of the white bass yall caught female? Just curious...

A few of mine were. Saw the eggs as I cleaned them this morning.

LOL. My camo tube must be doing its job then. I had my MP3 player in so I didn't hear any music but my own.

TD,

I was tinking of heading to the Provo Harbor but was afraid that I would catch more trout like I did last year.[shocked]

I figured that I would stack the chips in my favor and stay away from large amounts of fresh cool water.

By the way does anybody know about how much a 28" channel would weigh?

May have to get a scale one day. My new tube should be here tomorrow. can't wait to get it set up and going.

Hmmm, I must have read the lable wrong at Sportsmans.

Now I need to get a brown trout on a fly (going up today to try) and then the next one up is a smallmouth bass on the fly. Already got some crawdad flies for that at East Canyon and maybe Pineview when the water warms up. Any suggestions on what size tippet? I like 5x latley. Still strong that I don't snap it all the time.
[signature]
I don't use tippet. I use P-Line fluoro. Pretty much 6 lb, but have kicked it up to 8 lb on a couple of lakes that straighten hooks and snap lines. So. I would be using 3X or 4X. I use 5X on the Provo river[Wink]
Actually that fly appears to be a Salmon fly
I am sure the fly was in the Bugger bin, specially at Sportsmens. And it could be called a bugger, but if you want to tie one similar, might look at bunny streamers/leehes.
Woolly Buggers are marabou tail, Saddle hackle and chenille.

"By the way does anybody know about how much a 28" channel would weigh?"

[cool][#0000ff]A lot of variables. A fat female might weigh between 8-10 pounds. A big headed skinny bodied male would probably weigh only about 6-7.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Here is a pic of one about that same length. It weighed right at 10#.[/#0000ff]

This one was a little less on the girth but it felt like a hundred pounder on the end of the pole.

It's a good thing that I don't have to catch them that size all the time it wears a person out. [Wink]

Hello TYE DYE, you go fishing during the day so much I just have to ask if you work and how do you find the time to do all of your fishing during the weekdays. Just curious thanks. john r
