Went with Spikestr today up to Current Creek Reservoir. Left SLC at 7:30am and was in time to see the Tiger Trout cruising the shore. Been about a year since I have been there...boy have those red sided shiners grown!
Threw the gold blue fox size 2 with no love....different years call for different tactics I guess. Threw out a Rainbow Count Down Rapala in size CD 9. That got a HUGE 22+ inch Cutthroat Trout to follow it in right to the shore line....and oh...no love...that hurt.
So I switch up to a Hot Mustard Mudder Count Down Rapala in size CD 7. Immeadiately a Rainbow Trout takes it...shakes it....and off the hook. A few casts later...same story....and again and again! So aggrovating!
A trolling party came by and told us that the action was good on the Rainbow Rapala. So I switched and BAM....got a 15 inch Tiger Trout...when beached she flipped about, got off the hook and sorta just sat in 1in of water thrashing about for a few seconds. I told Spikestr, "I think she thinks that she is still hooked, if only I did not forget the net today". Dam...no pic for that one. Done with the lack of aggresive fish Spikestr wanted to go the Strawberry Pinnicals. Having never been there myself I thought....why not.
Wow all I can say about that place is A+++++ on the scenery. The flows were very low, which was surprising considering it is May. The low flows made holes hard to come by.
Splitting up we took on the river. I saw some browns but they wanted nothing to do with my gear. The small holes ment a spinner or rapala could only stay in the hole for a second or two. At least the views were great.
Spikestr was able to get a Brown about 16 inches in legth...not bad. Wanting to shake the "pinnical skunk" off too I was led to a large hole that just had to have a fish. Throwing the spinner down stream I watched a large fish move up and stalk the spinning metal. The mouth opened and BAM...FISH ON! Not having my net I was worried...so I got into the water..pinned the fishes body with my ankles, and gill grabbed him. To my surprise it was a Rainbow Trout with slash marks under the jaw....oh and it was a fat 18 incher.
As I went to look at the hole I saw what I thought was a RECORD size brown trout. Wondered what I should throw at him, maybe a large Rapala, with a marlin rod? Sure enough it surfaced....it was a HUGE beaver!
We went up higher on the river...hooked a few browns but then lost them The wind picked up and Spikestr was ready to go back home....so we left...with only a few fish to show for it...at least the scenery was nice...and the company was great.
