Sorry if this has been asked before, my search with the search bar above only turned back salt water threads, nothing I saw was fresh water based.

Anyways, I am looking at getting a nice little travel sized rod or pack sized rod. I want a small compact one so that I can take it to college with me and not take up a ton of space. My fly rods do this nicely, my one piece ugly stik not so much.

My biggest issue is my budget, I want to get set up with rod, reel, and a rod tube (PVC pipe is fine for me) for no more than $200, the less it is the happier I am. I dont know how much fishing I will be doing but I know that on the week we get off for thanks giving I will be heading up to do some bass fishing.

That brings up the second issue, I need a little rod and a reel that will be light enough for fishing for trout but be able to handle smaller large and small mouth bass. Im mainly a trout guy but in the past couple of years Ive been having more and more fun fishing for smallies. My ugly stik lite has handled everything up to a 26" walleye down to a 6" trout with ease so something that is similar to that would work.

Thanks for the help all, Im not too great in picking out spinning rods. My entire life Ive had $30 rod/reel combos untill I got old enough to fish on my own and drive on my own, when I went and bought my ugly stik which has served me well untill now. Any kind of information and help is greatly appreciated!

Why not Daiwa? I am assuming you are talking about a spinning outfit. These kits are small and contain everything:

I actually have a little Daiwa travel rod, its a casting rod but Im not really impressed with the quality or the construction. Feels a bit flimsy and its sections dont fit together all that well.

I was considering trying one of these, I have an upcoming purchase at cabelas I need to make so If I add this on Ill get a $20 discount. Cabelas will usually give their gear a lifetime warantee aswell. I just dont know how big of fish would one dare take on a rod like this?

Huh, we have had the Daiwa in the house for many years and semed like a great set up, in that it is still used to this day, but maybe the quality has gone down hill.
Read the reviews of the rod you posted, mixed reactions and likes, but some say they have caught Bass and Pike with it. Be sure on the warranty also, I bought a fly rod a few years back that was a Cabela's. Had no warranty and when broke, they offered no solution, or repair.

My Daiwa is an older model, my great grandmother who in her day was a VERY avid fisherwoman gave it too be because she didnt even like the feel of it. For some reason it feels like there is a slight wobble or wiggle inbetween the handle furrle and the rest of the rod. You can also hear a slight clicking noise.

Maybe it was just a lemon, Ill go check out a new spinning one.

Oh and do you think the reels on these little pack rods will hold up? I can usually tell which of my reels are good and which are bad because after a month of me fishing for bass I usually destroy the bad ones.

I flly fish with my bass rod .. its fun..

put on a fly or top popper with a wet float and toss it.

I catch some carp and gar that way. I recently got into making videos so I might be uploading some fly fishing stuff from Arkansas soon. I catch big bass but there is some good trout fishing only a hour from me and this site got me interested in it. I will be a beginner at it but did it this spring in February and liked it. Small fish compared to the bass I catch but fun fishing.

I have respect for fly fishers that do it with 3lb test and catch big browns...

It takes skill.

tight lines guys.

Ive been reading her posts in the fly forum and she does know quite a lot.

Just bad experience with a Daiwa makes me leery to try them again.

Hi flyfisher,if your looking for a new daiwa spin cast combo here is a 30 lb carp caught on one...Daiwa shock, great rod and reel....plus its dirt cheap...the crack sound is cause its a two piece, thats where the sound comes from plus cheap and a bit heavy..but even a 15 year old can handle it..

I had a reel I bought seperate..
