Hit the Web behind my house in Riverdale for about an hour on Tuesday. That stretch of the river has proven to be the bane of my existence so this short trip I was just wading in the wonderfully cool water and reconoitering any spots i could find to hold fish. Ended up with 1 brown, 1 bow and a whitie and lost a couple more. I always see whities down there and I know there are trout there but not in high densities. What do you all think the problem with that stretch of river is? I think it has alot to do with water quality but when was the last time it was stocked? Pressure down there has to be another influencing factor. Also I went back out at dusk just to see if anything was hatching and to my amazement i saw some BIG yellow mayflies. I looked it up and guess its a hexagenia. They were around size 10/12.

well i know that the whitefish ratio on the weeeb is like6 to 1. and thats the section between RP and echo. i dont know about the lower but i would imagine its pretty close to that.

The Weber through Riverdale has always puzzled me too. Like you said you know theres fish in there but they are hard to track down. You asked about stocking.. if you look at the DWR stocking reports it usually says X amount of fish stocked in Weber river in Weber county. So where are they putting the fish? Im not sure exactly where you are fishing but maybe try places that the they can easily pull there truck up the the river and release the fish. If your looking for fishing close to home you might be better of trying the Ogden. The fish are not as big as the ones in the Weber on average but the Ogden has great fishing.

I love the Ogden. I'm just trying to get a little more diversity in my life since it has revolved around the south fork and canyon the last year.

Fish hold in different sections of the river at different times of year. Although lure/fly/bait choice has a lot to do with catch rates too. You should try getting a scuba mask and "drifting" down the river looking into the holes...bet you'd see some big fish. I would do it myself but I do not want to mess up that spiky hair of mine. Might just have to try it though...sounds like it would be pretty cool! Espcially with a headcam.

Not too long ago I found a huge concentration of fish in a hole next to the Parker drive bridge. I sight fished for them for a long time and could not get a single bite. There were some hog fish in there over 20 inches, some of them browns, and a few I didn't recognize, but if they were whitefish they would have been record breaking sized..Every time I threw a spinner they would get excited but none of them would commit when the spinner got near them. I also spooked a nice looking smallmouth bass right under the bridge. The next time I went back to the same hole, but the water was not as clear. Threw spinners and rapalas, but no fish. There are some huge fish in that stretch, but they are hard to catch.

That is one of my favorite things about the Weber River. There have been many times where I sneak up to the bank and can see over 13 Browns holding up behind a downed tree. I cast out the Rapala and watch the feeding frenzy begin. Then after tricking a few they seem to loose interest. That is when I throw a spinner or marabou and then get a few more interested browns to bite. The big ones are smarter though...if you can see them...they can likely see you. Most my 15+ inch Trout bite far away or when I am using cover. If only they would drop those flows back down to what they were around mothers day!

I too am not a fan of that section. Not really sure if it's bad water quality, I've seen some nice midge, bwo hatches down there but never any fish rising. So, not sure what the deal is there. Seen slot of carp and suckers around there. But I know there are also some large browns in that section or at least there was 5 or 10 years ago.
Recently when I've fished it, i've been skunked every time but the first time I fished it and only caught a 10 inch bow.

there are a few still in there. about a year or so ago another forum member and i fished it. he caught a toad rainbow (suprised us being that far down river). he let it go and 2 weeks later i got him on the fly, hes still there.

This is the Fly Fishing section of BFT, so have any of you tried fishing them on a fly?

Perhaps[

I am sure to a purist like you a TubeDude Marabou (Tube'a'bou) on a fly rod does not count.

Sure it does. If you are using a fly rod, fly line, Reel, leader, tippet. Just a real big BEAD HEAD marabou fly.
Purist...not me, just a fly fisher by choice. That is why I read Fly Fishing sites[

For the record I was at TD's house last week and he gave me some hand tied flies of the exact pattern...just waiting for those flows to come back down.....gonna be a long wait at this rate.

Interesting to hear how his flies do on a river.

Busted! I beg for forgiveness for mentioning rapalas on the fly fishing board. haha! I do plan to get a fly rod.

Well I just got skunked by the south fork and lost creek yesterday so its probably just me... thanks for the thoughts.

I could help you there. Nothing fancy and donated by MacFly, but I can put some decent line on it for you.
