To the old man and his grandson who drove by me on the water tonight at Hyrum and asked if I wanted a trout because you "had too many". Are you kidding me? Are you really that stupid to first poach extra fish and then ask someone to take one from you so you are legal. That is why they call it a "LIMIT".
OK, rant is over! Had a friend from out of town that wanted to get out, so we did the trolling thing and faired pretty well with about 15 slimers in a couple of hours. Fishing was fair for the stockers and even a couple of larger ones. Spoons and small Rapalas.

So did he fill out a 'donation note'?
If I'm keeping fish I typically like to stop short - on the off chance that "next fish" will be a really bear!
Not saying I condone it, but been surprised how many times ice fishing I've heard someone call out "anyone want a trout" - when they're targetting panfish. Or one guy catches say a single perch, while another had a fair sampling, so it's combined.
Guess it depends on who's watching and what they enforce. I did encounter a lot of DNR visits this year at Hyrum. Very friendly, and informative folks - if you bother to chat 'em up a bit.
Irritating. I do keep my fair share, but I also do catch and release. Not sure why "keepin' yur limit" is such a huge goal. Take some for the smoker or the grill or the fryer, but leave some there to grow into big 'uns.
As for people who take MORE than their limit...[mad] I hope they get caught. And they will, one of these days. And when they do, I hope they lose their fishing privileges.
What a terrific lesson to teach one's grandson... [crazy]

i do agree you still have to look at the intent did they mean to do it maybe grandson hooked one deep while gramp's was packin up and thought it better to teach him generosity by giving it to some one else (even tho this is wrong) rather then just wasting it like you should and dumping it into the lake
its hard to say cant judge every thing with out knowing the whole story do you know the whole story did they intend to poach a small trout i think not should they get a ticket maybe i couldn't say from what i read in this post i don't know all the facts

And, maybe they just had "too many" for them to eat and didn't want to waste a fish. Most folks stick them in the freezer for a year or two and then throw them out.
Everyone seems to want to judge everyone else. And always in the worst way.

True...it is hard to tell from the post what all the facts were, and maybe they really weren't over their limit. However, I honestly don't see how anyone could "accidentally" catch more than their limit, if a fish is deep hooked simply cut the line. More than once I've cleaned fish that had an extra hook in their gullet.
Anyway bottom line is we all just need to treat fish like the resource that they are, and not take as many as possible just 'cuz we can.

Maybe he didn't really have too many. Maybe that was his cover so YOU wouldn't feel bad as he took pity on you for being such a lousy fisherman. [

Maybe you misunderstood and since the trout were small, he may have said "we have 2 mini trout."

Phart,
You may be right there. I have often said that sometimes when I fish, I can hear the Benny Hill theme song playing in the background![blush]Convinced someone could win the $10,000 from AFV if they could video the calamity in my boat when things go wrong.

Ha - love it! The Benny Hill Theme - I'll have to start whistling that! My son has

ly taken some of my "boat chaos" as me stressing at him, but it's more the anchor, the rope, the current, the wind, the waves, the trees that we're headed into, and the resulting rods getting snagged up, and .... yeah - list goes on!
Of course - when you need it most, either the 'lectric has NO guts, or the Gas won't fire! Yeah - don't want to be up a creek w/o that paddle!
Too "mini" trout - that's believable for Hyrum stockers! Kinda like the "two test tickles" for the Elmo dolls.. Haha.
Not that I wish that stuff on anyone, but really glad to hear I'm not the only one who has those moments.
