Headed to lake Powell on Friday for a few days. I'm going with a few friends that don't fish so I will be doing all my fishing from shore Assuming that I don't see boils that I can cast to from shore (I rarely do) what is the best way to catch fish? I have not fished much for bass at all but would love to try. Also I am learning to fly fish this year so if anyone has ever used a fly rod on Powell from shore I would be curious about that as well.

Save yourself a lot of trouble and load up on 4-5" senkos in watermelon and green pumpkin. Learn how to put them on a wide gap worm hook and fish them weightless 99% of the time. Cast them out and let them sink to the bottom. Work them slowly back and repeat. 9/10 times they'll get hit on the initial drop. You'll get the hang of it. It's stupid easy and a blast to do. They're better than live bait.

I had my best luck about a month ago using a green pumpkin colored tube jig with a 3/16 oz. jig head. Though it sounds like the bass and crappie are off their beds and a little deeper?

First, check out Wayne's Words ( www.wayneswords.com) to get the latest on what is going on. You can check out the map(s) to see where you are going, etc. I would also look at the Fishing Tips section to get an idea of what type of structure to look for as you are walking along the shore.
Second: Get a variety of Senko's, grubs, and jigs. If you are going to be on a houseboat, you can fish in the evening for channel cats off the back of the HB when anchored.
Your fly rod will be good for SMB, Blue Gill, maybe even Crappie, depending on where you are. Take a slection of surface popping bugs, lots of fun on the fly rod.
ENJOY !!!!
The Senko style worm rigged wacky (hook in the middle) is deadly on bass anywhere that has got them. Just let it sink, jerk the rod up in pulses about 3 times, reel in the slack and let it sink, then repeat. You so much as see the line slightly move.....set the hook...you got one. Pumpkin, Red/Black, Changible Craw, Watermelon...are all great colors in clear water. Doesn't hurt to add some Berkley's Crawfish Spray...pricey but effective. Best of luck to ya....I have always wanted to fish that place...just way too far of a drive. Looking forward to your report on the place.

Pretty much what everyone else said. I was down there a few weeks ago and was 90% fly fishing. Clouser minnows of various colors worked well. I got into some stripers with a white and chartreuse wooly bugger, tied big and full on a long shank -- over 5" long. They wouldn't touch it unless I was stripping it FAST. I had to let it sink to 10-15 feet and then strip the snot out of it. I could see 4 or 5 fighting for the chance to eat it first. Awesome. Smallies were on fire with Clouser's and Crayfish patterns. All of the smallies guts were full of small GREEN/OLIVE crayfish. If you want to blast some carp (who doesn't, right?) a big caddis on top will do wonders. If they're cruising sub-surface, then yellow and orange glo-bugs worked well.
Good luck my man!
