Hi there,

I was going to take up fishing again for the first time in several years and I have no rod/reel/tackle. I'm going to be fishing for brown trout, lake trout, and land locked salmon. A friend of mine is very knowledgable in regards to fishing and he recommended that I buy...

Shimano Stradic 5000FJ (I don't have the stats on this)
St. Croix Triumph series, model # TRS86MHF2 (stats below)
Model TRS86MHF2
Length 8'6"
Power MH
Action Fast
PCS 2
Line Weight 8-17
Lure Weight 3/8-1
Rod Weight 5.8
Handle 6
Price $ 100

The thing is that these are pretty expensive for my tastes. Are their cheaper alternatives? I'm not familiar with the quality of rod/reel manufacturers these days so I was hoping some of you more knowledgable anglers would be able to suggest cheaper alternatives. I should also note that I probably won't go fishing that often (maybe once or twice a month) so I don't want to spend a lot on something I'll use infrequently. My budgets is... anything cheaper than what I would have to pay to get the rod reel listed above. Seriously speaking, I'm just looking for more affordable alternatives, if I could get what I needed for less than $100.00 I'd be happy but I'm guessing that's not going to happen. Thanks!

That is a pretty pricy set up for someone who doesnt plan to use it much. I love the St Croix Rods but I fish a lot. There are pleny of alternatives to any rod. Check out the bass pro series rods they arent bad. When I first started I bought them for like $20-$30 and still have them today. All reel companies make cheaper reels as well. If you dont like the bass pro stuff go to like a dicks or some kind of sporting good store. It will all work fine for what you are trying to do.
