NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. --- A special reception benefitting the Tag-A-Giant (TAG) Fund of The Ocean Foundation will kick off the highly anticipated STANLEY MELTZOFF - OCEANS AND OTHER WORLDS art exhibition in New York. The event will take place at the Museum of American Illustration in New York on Thursday, June 7 at 6 - 8 p.m.
In addition to providing a special preview of the exhibition, the TAG reception will feature a special silent auction including an opportunity to bid on a unique day-long research adventure for four during one of TAG's 2013 bluefin tuna tag-and-release campaigns. Special giveaways, refreshments, and a cash bar will also be part of the evening.
The exhibition itself will run from June 6 - July 28 and feature the incredible marine art of premier American painter and TAG Marine Art Fellow, Stanley Meltzoff (1917-2006). With some 90 paintings scheduled for display, this show will be the largest Meltzoff retrospective ever mounted. Many are direct from the artist's estate and have never before been on public display.
The late Stanley Meltzoff, born in New York City in 1917, is widely regarded as the first and still preeminent underwater wildlife painter of all time. His works include more than 350 paintings of saltwater game fish, including permit, bonefish, sharks, billfish, and of course tuna. Meltzoff imagery dominated the sporting press for decades, featured in such publications as Field & Stream, Gray's Sporting Journal, Outdoor Life, Sporting Classics, Sports Illustrated, and many others. His art holds pride of place in collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Getty Art Museum, National Geographic Society, New Britain Museum of American Art, and those of many private collectors. Widely published and repeatedly honored throughout his career, Meltzoff's death in 2006 stilled a brush that will never be equaled.
TAG works to reverse the decline of northern bluefin tuna by supporting the science behind innovative and effective policy and conservation initiatives. We engage all stakeholders in efforts to rebuild and maintain sustainable populations of northern bluefin tuna in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Participants in this special event will learn about our progress to date and bid on a selection of silent auction items. Most notable will be the chance to join TAG on the water for a day-long research/fishing adventure. The silent auction winner (and three guests) will join a mission to catch, tag, and release giant bluefin tuna. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research on one of the world's most magnificent marine species.
The Museum of American Illustration is located at 128th East 63rd Street in Manhattan.
It is also home to the Society of Illustrators, a venerable 111-year old institution whose membership has included virtually every major illustrator of the past century. Meltzoff joined such luminaries as Frederick Remington, Norman Rockwell, and N.C. Wyeth when he was elected to its Hall of Fame in 1999.
