I piddled around and left for the river late. What a nice day to be on the water! A whole bunch of other folks thought so too. The nuke area was full of boats. The only species that were presenting today were the schoolie white bass. The big shad were just not to be had - the flow of 15000 cfs is just a bit too fast for the threadfin and they stayed deep and scattered. There were, however, zillions of tiny shad or minnows in the boils that were too small to get caught in the cast net. The whites were occasionally going nuts for them, but most of the action even for the whites was deeper (20' +/-). The cats were pretty much a no-show, and the post-spawn bass appear to have stopped the staging pattern and mostly scattered.

BUT (and I mean BIG BUTTS) there were several boatloads of CFF UGLY out for the day. Puddle jumper, cathooker, and cheez were all together in one boat so full of ugly that I used the telephoto lens just so I wouldn't have to get too close. And bassERT was out putting us all to shame on the white bass. He was telling me about the wonderful secret lure that drumking had put him on, and that he bought a dozen of them. Think he would offer to part with just ONE so that a poor fellow CFFer could get in on the action?? Noooooo! And then he had the nerve to holler "there's one!" and "there's another!" several times as I helplessly gazed on with my lower lip pooched out and a mournful look on my face. I'm not above begging, but I could tell from the evil glint in his eye that he would take too much pleasure in turning me down. So instead I continued to get my exercise throwing that 12 pound net - a fruitless gesture good for my heart and bad for my back.

Hell, those white bass were probably sour anyway.
