Full Version: prop tightness?

So I ruined my prop last weekend at Deer Creek. I was waiting for my buddy there at the island marina when I drifted right in front of that cabin, before I could do anything I wacked off one of the blades on my prop.

I just bought a new/used prop from the prop doc here in Orem, I was just wondering how tight you tighten the nut when cinching it down?

What kind of drive do you have? I have an OMC and all I have to do is finger tighten the nut and then use a wrench until the first set of castle nut holes line up for the cotter pin.

I'm not sure it's an outboard. I just snugged it up, not putting too much torque on it.

How tight was it when you took the broken one off?
That's a good place to start.
If you had to really yarn on it to get it off then yarn on it putting it back on. If it was not very tight then don't over tighten. If it was loose as a goose, then do that.

Most props are held on by "Crown Nuts" with groves that a cotter pin goes through to hold in place. If this is the case tighten until the nut is pretty snug, then back off just enough for a slot on the crown nut to line up with the hole for the cotter pin.

The last one was just snug, but the prop I bought from the prop doc was a little different than the broken one. He gave me a brass fitting that slid over the splines and sat on top of the prop, then you put that bendable "washer" on where you bend the tabs between the grooves and followed by the nut. Because of that I wasn't quite sure but it all seems solid now, and the prop spins freely. Though when I push on the prop there is a slight movement (like 1/8" if that) that made me wonder a little. I hope this makes sense, I'll try to take some pics.

It does make sense and a touch of play sounds about right.
Looking forward to pics.

Well I went and ran it (I was fairly confident it was good to go), it ran like a champ, so I guess I got it right. While I was at it I took my trolling plate off to see if I could conserve a little gas and have a little better hole shot (and top speed), but I couldn't really tell a difference. But the trolling plate didn't really slow me down much anyways, I just use my electric motor for that.
