So after doing some research we decided to spend the weekend camping, hiking, and fishing at Pittsburg Lake. I have never been up there so we printed off some directions and got good and lost. Ended up almost to Silver Lake Flatt before someone gave us a trail map and we figured out where to go. If you want to go up here a vehicle with high clearance and 4 wheel drive with large tread is required. There are a lot of large sharp rocks and about a foot+ of water through a few streams to drive through. The hike is about 1.5 miles and gains about 1500 ft. The first half is loose and there is very little shade in the mid day. Hike it early in the morning, bring lots of water. The lake sits at around 9000ft above sea level and you can see the back of Alta on your way up. The water is crystal clear and super clean from snow melt and maybe a spring? On the back side of the lake there are little water falls that disappear into the earth and I assume come up in the lake somewhere. There is also a cabin from the late 1800's that people appear to have been camping in recently.
Fishing was easy however the fish are babies. We caught 30-40 between the three of us. All were 6-8 in Brook Trout. They loved Jakes, Panther Martins, and Worms. It was fun catching them, but none were big enough to eat.

YEAH BUDDY!!! Nice work and I am glad to see your car could make it. I was going to ice fish it but the avalanche conditions never played in my favor.
It looked like there was not a whole lot of back casting room for fly guys. Is it a steep drop from shore or is it a gentile slope to the deeps? Kind of want to use waders.

Its a great spot to take the kids. They get their exercise and then they can catch a boatload of fish.

There are a lot of spots where you can fly fish, my pics do not do this lake justice.

Glad you found it
That lake use to have some big fish in it back in the day. Once word got out and a couple of hard winters, that's about average anymore.

We saw one decent sized one jump in the middle. Maybe hiking up with an inflatable may pay off sinking off the bottom. A guy we ran into said he went up in July last year and there was still 7-8 feet of snow and all but about 15ft of the lake was frozen still. However he still caught some. Either way, it was nice to get up there and really get away.

I also forgot to mention the wildlife. At first we noticed a tun of chipmunks and squirrels but at night... my buddy spotted eyes about 5ft off the ground watching us. Grabbed the spotlight and it was a curious deer. Later there were two more about 6ft up but whatever it was it was deep in the brush and we couldn't make out what it was. There are Black bear, elk, and moose up there so me and my handgun slept close that night haha

Beautiful area...I backcountry ski that whole area nearly every year....was gonna join TDT in ice fishingt that lake this year..but as he stated...the avalanche conditions never played in our favor. Next year for sure.
Thanks for posting!

I love areas like that where you can actually "get away" It's the primary reason I built my Blazer.
