My son recently moved to Idaho but he is still trying to get everything up there, like his 12ft Jon boat. Looks like I'll be bringing it up for him next week. My question, will I need to stop at the border and get some type of permit to bring it from Utah into Idaho. Thanks for any help.

It will need to be inspected. Please plan to be through to stop it is free. Ron

Only if you hit the water, but might not be a bad idea to stop in before Malad. To just deliver it I would say no, but he will have to license it there. But, they aren't the 365 like Utah. It is Jan. 1st on Boats too.

You should be fine just hauling it up to him. I brought mine in from SD with no issues. I just bought the invasive sticker before hitting the water.

Thanks everone.
One question SDH&F, did you have to change the hull numbers on your boat when you licensed it in Idaho?

I have yet to claim Idaho residency. My home is still for sale back in SD, so I'm waiting till it's sold. My truck and boat are still registered/licensed in SD. I bought a non-resident fishing license and a non-resident invasive tag.

ALL boats that are coming into Idaho HAVE to be inspected if the inspection site is open, even if you don't plan to launch them. A person can sneak across the border when they are closed, but that doesn't make it right. That is exactly how we will end up with the Zebra, and Quaga mussels someone will think they don't need to be checked. If a boat had mussels and it was raining. DO you think that those mussels could come off and into a canal or stream? I know it is a long shot but inspection is free. Why not do it?

I traveled all interstate through Idaho when I moved here... During the day I'll add as well. Never saw any kind of boat inspection area.

Depending where you come across the border you might not hit one. Your not required to "find" one. Still if a guy is bringing a boat in from a stat that is known to have invasive species it would be a fantastic idea to have his boat inspected. Ron

Had I have seen an inspection area, I would have most definetely stopped. [Smile]

you guys read this right http://voices.idahostatesman.com/2012/04...sive_quagg

You more than likely will run across a port on 84 or I15

Ron, just a question.....Could I get more muscles if i skipped across the border at night? Smile

That has some humor. But, does bring up the obvious. PEOPLE need to take care of their gear and not expect BIG BROTHER to point it out.
It truly is ridiculous that we need to have someone inspect our boats. It is the owners responsibility. That ol' "maybe I won't get caught" is not an option in this case.

If going through Malad direction, the post is at the end of the first parking lot now. Takes but a few minutes and I am sure they welcome the conversation. That has got to be one of the top 10 most boring jobs.

I would agree that people need to be more active in checking their own stuff but the fact is most don't. The spread of these invasive species has been so fast and complete that I would not be surprised if Idaho already has them. A lot of boats can go into SFCR and other places without inspection.
I don't like big brother interfering any more then the next guy but in this case they are doing something good. ROn

Some peope ACTUALLY DO take care and INSPECT thier own rigs.

I agree a lot do, but a lot don't. If they did we would not have the mess we have now. Ron

This is NOT a Big Brother issue, and even if it was, it is a good thing. We need more inspection stations, not fewer, because the potential impact on Idah fisheries is massive. If out-of-state visitors are inconvenienced, too bad. The stations have successfully stopped several badly infested boats and trailers. Mike

The hull numbers stay the same . They are Coast Guard Numbers and never change . Even if the boat is sold or ends up in a different state . Curt G.

I think he's talking about the numbers found on the bow of the boat & not the actual serial numbers found on the transom. I've bought 3 boats from out of state and have had to put new bow letters/numbers on when it was registered in Idaho, pretty common thing to do.
