What a great time I had. Although it was only fast and furious the last morning I was there. The first two hours were slow and then it got crazy. Up to that point I had caught only 5 fish, 5 if you can call a 4" chub a fish. Then WHAM! a fish hit hard and went deep into my backing. That was the fish I was looking for. Once it stopped, it came rushing back towards me or so I thought. I knew I couldn't reel fast enough to keep tension on it so I started stripping. No I didn't start taking off clothes. That would have been an ugly sight. It was soon obvious that the fish was off. Looking down I had backing and line all tangled up everywhere. Once I untangled the whole mess resolved and got the flies in ( I always fish with two flies ) they were tangled up. That was a rush, but also a disappointment. The very next cast I landed another and it went like that on the following 3 casts. 5 casts and five fish hooked. 7 more casts and I was 7 for 12 on fish. Some were dinkers, but they were fish. Over the next 1 hour caught 7 or 8 more, but I had to wonder just how big the fish was that I lost. It was the "WALTER" (On Golden Pond) I was looking for. I had to keep looking at my watch and calculating time because I had a lunch date with my two college children down in Rexburg at 2:00 PM and I still had to break down camp. Why is it that when you have to leave the lake on a calm morning that the fish happens to be the best fishing day ever? That was fine for me because my kids are MY KIDS. Avery, since we got blown off the lake on Tuesday I went and checked out an old fishing hole on the Outlet. The worse thing was I had left my rod at the camp thinking I was not going to want to fish there, I had come for the lunkers at Henry's. Well fish were hitting the surface everywhere and it took me back to the last time I had fished that hole 24 years ago. When I got back to the trailer and it was blowing 50 mph gusts. I ate and headed back to the Outlet. I had a blast and thinking next time I am over there I had better plan on fishing that section again. The last time I was there I was still a Panther Martin Guy. Flyfishing the Outlet was fun. I caught two 14 inchers, but there are bigger ones in there. 47 years ago I caught an 18 incher to have the biggest fish of the night and my avatar photo is a 21 incher out of the Outlet as well.Moose are the biggest scare of fishing that section, need I say more with the photo attached. The fly of choice of most the fish in that furious 1 1/2 hours was a tan mohair leech size 8 or 10. Over by the cliffs on Tuesday morning the fly of chioce was a dark green and black woolly bugger size 2. I caught a 4 and 2 three pounders that morning as well as some 17 inchers.

I had a lot of foul hooked fish in the four days I was there. Is that common? I am talking around 14 times.

Sounds like a great trip. Reminds me of some of my trips I've taken and makes me want to go back again.

DANG YOU!!!!!![Wink]

Great report. Generally I fish with size 8 -10 leeches. The foul hooking could happen from using two flies. That is when it has happened to me.

Nice report. I hooked "Walter" twice and I was sure I had the fish I was looking for. First time was Sunday about 5 am and all by myself. Trolling a big black leech with a minnow. I had caught maybe 1/2 dozen fish in the 3 or 4 pound range when I hooked a monster. I'm not sure how long I had him on but it seemed like forever. I thought I had won but at the last minute, when I was reaching for the net, he had one more run in him and he spit the hook. Dang! Dang! Dang! I was so happy but at the same time bummed that I couldn't get a picture with him. That fish was well over 10 and pushing 28-29". Got back to the cabin for some bacon and eggs and like I thought no one believed me. Tuff crowd I hang with. So I got kidded with the rest of the trip until the last morning. Took my buddy to the spot at 5 am to prove Walter was there. I went with a 4" tube jig this time in a color that was as close to sculpin as I had. After 30 minutes of trolling this very small area my buddy was ready to give up. I was like "shut up and put some more smelly jelly on your spinner". I just tried to keep him talking so I could keep fishing. Well 15 minutes later Walter found my tube. He hit that thing so hard I thought the pole was going to break. The reel was screaming, my buddy was screaming and I was too. Unfortunately, I was using one of his poles because he said I was fishing to light of gear for Henry's. This fight didn't last long. The third time Walter went airborne I just couldn't keep him on with that heavy pole. Dang! Dang! Dang! But my buddy got to see him and now he believes my fish story. So Walter still swims in Henry's for another day.

Not one of my fish ever went airborne. It is kind of nice to see what they look like before trying to get them in. At Magic almost everyone does the tail dance at least once or twice.

If they are small I like to get them in as fast as I can without breaking the line. If they are big I take my time. I am already dreaming about my next trip over in September or October.

You must have gotten all cuts. The hybrids will usually jump a time or two from my experience, but the cuts hardly ever/almost never jump.

I want to know how you managed to get in the Outlet. Seems like the old timers own that area. I have had many a hook straightened in that area....the weeds[Wink][laugh]

I don't recall many of the Cutts or Hybrids I have caught there jumping. Maybe one or two, but nothing to remember. I figure they are too fat...LOL

Very nice haul there "t" maybe we will meat up in Sept. Oh, I have caught Walters father[Wink][cool]

Fished Henrys this morning and found fish at Duck Creek, outside of the A-Frame Bay in 12 feet of water and a few large brook trout at Targhee Creek. Damsels are hatching, but most fishermen are finding fishing pretty slow. Best flies were Mity Mouse, Bead Mity Mouse and damsel patterns.

Out of maybe 50 fish I seen landed only like two jumped. And both of those were when we were trolling at a break neck speed. I think that may have something to do with it.

Hopefully the picture of the 21 inch brook loaded.

[quote onlyone]Hopefully the picture of the 21 inch brook loaded.[/quote] Nice! What would make it even nicer is if it was a lake-born fish with some color!

That's probably because of the cutthroat heritage. Cutts aren't famous for jumping, but rainbows are. I still like what cutts represent tho, that is THE WILD part of Nature.
