I decided to put my day off to some good use and made a couple of furled leaders. I used 6/0 uni thread, one camel and one yellow. I made a jig out of a 1x6, a couple of cup hooks, and 5 empty prescription bottles. I screwed the bottle caps to the board at the proper intervals for the 8' leader.

The first leader popped loose at the big end and came somewhat unfurled so I ended up with about a 4.5' leader after I tied a loop in it.
The second one turned out much better, but I don't think I twisted it enough initially. Either way, it's about 5'8" long without a tippet and works really well. I added a 2' section of 2x and will attach a tippet to that for fishing. I compared it to a tapered mono leader of about the same length and the difference is stark. The furled leader would turn a fly over easily with my hand, but the mono leader wouldn't even think about it.
I can't wait to fish with it tomorrow, barring the opportunity to be a human lightning rod.
I'm thinking about tying a longer one for used with my 12' crappie pole to see how that works, just for fun.
