I just returned from the Stanley area. I fished Stanley Lake and the Yankee Fork dredge ponds. Nothing too exciting, just small hatchery trout, and a couple little kokanee in Stanley Lake.

It was a nice trip, but I need more fly gear to cover the bases of water types in the area - especially a sinking line for the lakes. There have to be some larger fish in there, if I could just find them. I put my float tube in at one of the Stanley Lake campgrounds, and crossed it to fish the far side. That was mid-day and nothing was biting then. With the exception of about one hour one morning, action was very slow. I spent evenings just hanging a worm 3' under a float, and caught a few each day that way.

I caught a tagged rainbow, my first.

The Salmon appears to be running higher than some of my other trips to the area. I didn't fish it this trip since I'm not very good at fishing fast water.

i caught 2 tagged trout and 2 others we were camping with caught tagged trout. i think they are trying to see how quickly, and how far the fish are moving.

update: I brought home something other than fish. I seem to have [url "http://dpd.cdc.gov/dpdx/html/CercarialDermatitis.htm"]cercarial dermatitis[/url] aka "swimmer's itch" from wading in Stanley Lake. (I haven't been to a doctor, but the symptoms match)

...and I thought standing in a nice clear mountain lake in sandals and shorts was a great way to cool off on a hot summer day. Be careful out there.

i'm always sure to check for leaches also there are plenty of them in the stanley basin lakes

Bummer on the Itch!!

Topical steroid cream, anti-histamines, and go in if you get an infection or you really react to it. Some people have more of a reaction than others..

Wow - swimmers itch from that clear alpine water? Guess it depends on where you were wading. I know a local pond - you get it from rubbing up on weeds - at least where I was fishing the inlet - there were no weeds, just a rocky shore, and pretty sharp drop-off. But did see some fly-flingers working WAY out from shore, though they had waders on, and hence - protected.

We also got into a mess of bow-lings. Found one with a bit more size and muscle, but didn't hit into any Kokanee there. Alturas Inlet - found some.

Wondered - are there Cutthroat and Bull Trout in Stanley too?


Good advice on the treatment. I gather a bad reaction you can get pretty sick, so don't hesitate to visit a doctor if the over-the-counter remedies don't satisfy.

Hope your itch goes away. Doesn't sound like fun. I hope my kids and I don't end up with that. We were at red fish for a week.
