Hey Jim:
Just wanted to let you know radios can be a fun way to pass the time while on the water.
I used to use CB until I got into ham or amateur radio. It is an amazing hobby and there are lot of clubs and repeaters in Utah with experienced people that can help you get into it.
Anyone can buy a radio and listen, but it requires a simple and cheap license if you wan to be able to transmit. There are some great and compact radios out there. The one I bring around most places is the size of a deck of cards.
Anyway sorry if this was not the answer or too much of an answer for you. I would be happy to answer any questions anyone may have about ham radio.

I am KF7ENE, I have an icom T-90 but don't know how to use it. I would hate to drop it over the side, kind of expensive. I was a Radioman in the Navy in the 60's. Tks for the reply.

Come on out to one of the club events and someone will show you.
For Utah County there is a group on the 146.76 repeater that is active and always willing to chat.

I have a cb and a marine radio, the cb is in the truck, but least you go to Moab four wheeling, it's a lost and almost forgotten science. The marine radio comes in handy lending a hand or needing a hand.

I use the small hand held Cobra style. They work great with more than one tooner. Can give reports on what is working, plus lunch call, or just, time to go without yelling across the lake.
