As the Admiral Seas It
Fishing Report: 7/23/12 to 7/31/12
. Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can accommodate fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
BISBEES 2012 EAST CAPE OFFSHORE TOURNAMENT 24-28: Well, everyone was wondering as the tournament wrapped up. What ever happen to the fish? No qualifying marlin were weighed in this year’s 13th annual tournament, presented by Cabo Rivera. But by all other measures, it was an unconditional success. Three hundred and five anglers fishing aboard 61 boats caught 94 billfish during the three days of competition. Three marlin didn’t meet the 300-pound weight requirement. A total of 48 striped marlin, 30 blues, one black and 15 sailfish were returned to the water alive, however, for an impressive release ratio of 96.8 percent. In the gamefish category, 15 dorado and 3 yellowfin tuna were weighed.
“Conditions were good all three days,” said Capt. Sammy Talbert, skipper of Sneak Attack, a 65-foot American Custom Yacht. “We went one for two each on stripers and blue marlin on Friday, all off Punta Arena. I don’t know why there weren’t any big fish.”
One big fish did make it to the scales Friday and that tuna, caught by Awesome, a 30-foot Island Hopper home-ported in East Cape, set a new ECO tournament record. The 262-pound yellowfin earned Capt. Luis Duran and his team $37,095. Shaun Speer was the official angler for the catch.
Newcomer Taylor Horton and his buddies Dave Christman and Samuel Cosio also had a nice payday. Horton’s big dorado, a 57.5-pounder, earned $37,095 for the Ez-Duz-It team, skippered by Capt. Ernie Cosio of Cabo San Lucas.
Team Tenacious pocketed $22,950 in winnings for a nice 213-pound yellowfin, boated by Eduardo Aripez Beltran. Tenacious earned two day’s worth of the gamefish daily jackpot with the catch.
Ned Wallace, owner of Tiger Spirit, a 72-foot Donzi, is collecting $11,475 in daily jackpot money for his 40.1-pound dorado caught on the first day. Chip Wagner, who owns Hang ‘Em High, a 58-foot Miller Marine, is also taking home $11,475 in jackpot money for his 42.4-pound dorado landed on the second day.
Sniper, a 35-foot Cabo skippered by Capt. Angel Cesena of Cabo San Lucas, guided his crew to two blue marlin, one black and one striper. Those catches earned the team the top release honers. Sneak Attack was second in overall releases (2 blues and 2 stripers), while Wildcatter was the third place release team (2 blues and 1 striper).
The 2012 awards were presented on the beach overlooking a tranquil Sea of Cortez at the host facility, Hotel Buena Vista. Revelers enjoyed the presentation and live music by the great cover band, Cabo Max.
WATER: Seas have been fairly calm .The water tempeatures have been 85 to 86 on the Sea of Cortez side and 82 to 84 on the Pacific side and it seems to be just the way the fish like it.
WEATHER: July weather has set in and you know what that means. Tempeatures in the 90,s with humidity in the mid 70,s. Hotter and more humid this past week.
BAIT: Caballito are in abundance this week with some Mackerel. The bait is at the standard 3$ a piece. Some frozen Ballyhoo have been found on the bait boats. Try and find fresh frozen and not refrozen.
BILLFISHING: A Blue Marlin weighing in at 700 pounds was reported in Cabo, around the 23 of July, and a few days later a Black Marlin was caught weighing 550 pounds. The good fishing we think is here to stay awhile. Early this week lots of Stripped Marlin tailing and most taken on live bait in and around the 1150 and 95 areas on the Sea of Cortez side. We also are still getting reports of some Sailfish being caught. Then as the week progressed the good fishing seemed to move to the Pacific side. In some areas on Thusday the tides had changed and there was some green water but still the Stripped Marlin fishing was decent from the light house all the way up to Los Arcos. As the green water lingered for a couple days by Saturday fishing had pretty much slowed down. Most Blue Marlin were being caught offshore in the blue water and closer to shore Stripped Marlin were being picked up in the green water. Our own Bob Marlin today saw some action today with 2 Marlin and 1 Dorado. Really all in all the fishing has been good.
TUNA: Seems as if the Tuna are here in numbers. The Jamie banks area is producing lots of Tuna this past week .The Tuna are in the porpoise and being caught on Rapalas, Cedar Plugs and Hoochies. Some reports indicated Tuna being caught in the 40 to 60 pound range near Jamie Banks and the Golden Gate. Even a few 200 pound Tuna we caught on the kite at the Golden Gate. It seems 1 to 3 miles off shore is where the Tuna are , but by Saturday the numbers had slowed down as some green water had moved into the area. Today, inside the Golden Gate 22 miles out, water was 81 and we were catching Tuna on Hoochies, Strike Kings and Cedar Plugs. This past week for Tuna was definitely a good week and we expect the tides and green water to be moving out soon and we see the bite returning .
DORADO: The Dorado fishing has been good this past week. Earlier in the week around the 1150 and 95 lots of nice size Dorado were being snagged.. More toward the middle of the week the fish moved to Jamie Banks and we started seeing big Dorado being caught on live bait and lures. Seems the Dorado and the Tuna were in some of the same areas from 1 to 3 miles offshore.
WAHOO: Wahoo fishing has picked up this past week. Various boats reporting Wahoo in the 50 pound range.
INSHORE: The inshore fishing has been pretty good from Grey Rock up to Los Arcos. Tuna and Dorado being caught with some Marlin from pangas landed.. Amberjack, Groupers and Roosterfish were caught also on the Pacific side . Making it a pretty good week for inshore fishing .
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jcsportfishing, Pisces Sportfishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don’t even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don’t even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don’t care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don’t have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report. Until next time good fishing and we hope to see you in Cabo soon.
